TAIGA
The Taiga biome
is located in Northern regions like Canada and Northern Russia, and stretches
across almost 20 million square kilometers.
(11% of the
worlds land)
Obtained from http://mbgnet.mobot.org/sets/taiga/index.htm
The Taiga is known for its lack of diversity regarding Trophic levels.
§
Evergreen
trees are the most common and abundant, (Spruce, hemlock, and fir)
and have wax-covered, thin needles.
§
Conifers, evergreen trees that in late winter or
early
fall produce cones, classify most of the types of trees
in the Taiga
§ There are few broad leaf trees (those that lose their
leaves in the fall) such as birch, poplar, and aspen.
§
The Tamarack, an
evergreen species, is one of the only evergreen species that loses its
leaves for the fall.
§
Trees
in the taiga are usually less than 30meters tall
The Taiga animals live
through a cold, snowy environment.
Some animals migrate, others hibernate, while some adapt to the cold winters.
The Taiga also infested with
insects during the summer.

The soil has a tendency to
be acidic due to the needle-leaf trees
§
The main soil type associated with the Taiga is spodosol
§
The poor soil conditions is the reason why there are few
types of trees
The Taiga?s climate has basically two seasons, winter and summer.
§ In
winter the weather can get as cold as ?65F and as warm as 30F.
§ In
summer the weather can get as cold as 20F and as warm as 70F.
