Welcome to my family site @ Greenore in Co. Louth ROI
Carlingford Lough Co. Louth.
My name is Michael Desmond Hynes. I am a Bishop of the Catholic ORDER MATER DEI and live in the village emeritus of Greenore Co.Louth in the Republic of Ireland. I have 2 Auxiliary Bishops helping me run the vast diocese of Ulster & Cooley which has missionaries in various parts of the globe. I had an Archbishop relative in Armagh in the 1860's named Michael Kieran. Greenore is a picturesque former Railway village that was set up in 1870 by a British railway company to service a railroad track and port traffic between Holyhead in Wales UK and Greenore then UK now Rep of Ireland. Greenore in Co.Louth and the Hamlet of Greencastle in Co.Down is divided by a stretch of water of about 2000 metres. these waters are known as Carlingford Lough. At present in no mans land as the waters were not defined when Ireland got independence from Britain in way back in 1921. Greenore is 15 miles from Newry in the North of Ireland and 15 miles from Dundalk in Southern Ireland.
My family have been involved in the furniture business since 1957. I became a director of Hynes Bros Ltd Bellurgan Road Dundalk in November 1967 along with my 3 other brothers Eric Hynes, Oliver Kevin Hynes and John Colin (Con) Hynes. John Colin became the Chairman of the company while Eric became company secretary while myself and Kevin served as working directors. I left the company in 1983 though remained a director until December 1992 when the company was disolved and sold to my brother John Colin and his Son Alan Hynes who was the front man in the new company that was formed called Hynes Interiors Ltd. They now have @ least 4 subsidery companies and are going from strenght to strength. My eldest brother Eric Hynes retired and my brother Kevin also retired. In 1983 I enrolled in third level education and never looked back after 10 years gaining degrees in divinity, history and philosophy of religion. I then went on to become a priest and was quickly promoted in January 2000 to the rank of Bishop in charge of ORDER MATER DEI's Ulster & Cooley Peninsula diocese. Then the 1st of August 2000: I was made Worldwide Chancellor of the ORDER MATER DEI.
I am a boating enthusiast having built my own boats that fished lobster, crab, whelk and herring. At present I am the Secretary of the Greenore/Cooley Fisherman's Association and Secretary of the Cooley Environmental & Health Group as well as Treasurer of the Greenore/Greencastle Community Association. While the fishing industry is a depressed area at the moment here in Cooley, - tourism is a growth area. The cost of housing has rocketed due to the increased volume of tourists locating in our Peninsular. Many farmer are making a packet as they sell sites for housing and housing developments as a single site will cost @ least £40,000 in our area unless your are lucky and get a cheaper deal. We are located 3 miles from the mediaeval city of Carlingford in modern days a very small town with ancient castles based at the foot of Slieve Foy and set in a panoramic harbour area that has added attractions such a s a Marina and local Yatch Club as well as many exclusive eating haunts and bars that have become increasingly popularised by Carlingford winning the national Tidy Towns Contest way back in 1989. Many locals see Carlingford becoming a mini Hong Kong.
In Greenore we have a championship golf course and have given birth to many famous golfers in our time including my former next door neighbour Pat O'Hara who won the American Open in the last century. Pat died in 1946 the year before I were born. His brother Jimmy won the Irish Professional championship 3 times. Two doors up from me we had a Jimmy Carroll (now deceased) who won the East of Ireland amatuer championship and also in the next and only street in Greenore we have a Mike Ferguson who won the East of Ireland before going on to be a professional and ending up in a club in Austria until he retired and returned home to his native Greenore about 10 years ago.
My family were all musicians playing in the show band scene in Ireland. My late father Michael originally worked on the railway here in Greenore and got a railway house which was bought for £40 in 1955 when the railroad sold all their property. To day the same house is worth @ least £80,000. My father was born in 1895. His father was a seaman who was killed in Liverpool when he fell off a tram. Most Hynes's in this area have come from the west of Ireland many have been Police(Garda). However, my grandfather was hear before the Garda were formed therefore he did not come as a policeman. He was killed when my father was very young and he barely remembered his father who was a seaman and away from home a lot due to his occupation.
In the meantime I look forward to hearing from ye Hynes clan out there.
Bye for now,
+Michael - Ulster & Cooley
