Site Updated 09/23/01 11:15 PM EST
TheCatching Prospect Page has been updated and I've included an OPS chart in the Stats and Links section. Next up in a couple of days will be and end-of-season assessment of our first basemen My first weekly column will appear by the end of the week, when we will be discussing the disturbing rash of arm injuries. I will also be tinkering with the front page over the next few days so the look of the page may change somewhat. Remember the links to the other pages on this site are temporarily on the bottom of this page.
SITE ON HIATUS DUE TO TERRORIST ATTACKS OF 9/11/01
I was hard at work on my end-of-season positional rundown and was about to finish and post my analysis of catching prospects on the morning of 9/11 ( a day late, I know) when the planes started crashing into the Trade Center Towers. I, like many others, put my ordinary interests on hold while I sat transfixed watching the news. My heart goes out to all those deeply affected personally by this vicious act. As for the rest of us, our world has changed dramatically. This war will be different any war any of us alive now can remember in that civilians on our soil will almost certainly suffer more harm as this conflict continues. World Wars 1 and 2, Korea and Vietnam were fought over there, and if you weren't in the military you were OK. That won't be the case in this war. The future for all of us has certainly become less certain. God Bless America and our allies.
Check back here on 9/23 for a look at the Indians catching prospects.
Welcome to the most complete Cleveland Indians organizational site on the web. The focus will be on prospects throughout the Tribe's System. I will update this site frequently so check back often. With the end of the season I will replace the daily highlights page with a weekly column which will debut on September 10. Use the links at the bottom of this page to navigate through the positions, as well as the other pages. Also, I have started working on the end of the season analysis broken down by position. The first report (catchers) will be up on September 23rd, and subsequent reports on other positions will appear every 2-3 days till complete.
While looking at the up and coming talent we'll use some of the normal measurements of a player's progress, batting average, homers, RBI for hitters, wins and losses, ERA for pitchers, along with some more up to date, specific measures of production. The following is an explanation of some of the measures used:
HITTERS
OPS - on base percentage + slugging percentage. This is a pretty true measure of an offensive players worth, combining walk and hits frequency with power numbers.
PITCHERS
K/9 - strikeouts per 9 innings, an idea of a pitchers pure stuff, velocity, etc.
BB/9- walks per 9 innings, indicative of a pitchers control
H/9 - hits per 9 innings, Another indicator of a pitchers stuff
K/BB - ratio of strikeouts to walks, obviously higher is better
WHIP - walks and hits per inning
We'll also focus on the recent draft, big one for the Indians. The Indians are pretty deep in pitching prospects, but not as strong in position player prospects, especially at the upper levels of the Indians chain. The Indians had 5 of the top 51 picks this year, so it was a chance for the Tribe to restock the system.
When I refer to a players age I am using the player's age at the end of the 2001 regular season.
