The Bloody Hand of O'Reilly
The legend states that "the old king, while on his deathbed,
sent his two sons out onto the middle of the lake.
He told them that the first son to lay hand on the shore
would be proclaimed the new king, following
the old king's passing. The younger son , being the stronger
swimmer pulled ahead of his brother. Nearing the shore
and realizing that he would never overtake his brother,
the older brother removed the knife from his belt,
cut off his own hand and threw it onto the shore.
Thus he 'touched' the shore before his brother and became king."
The "Bloody Hand" is seen prominently
on the O'Reilly coat-of-arms.
