The Tobins of Halifax

Family Legend says that four brothers came to Newfoundland, probably with the English fishing fleet. Two stayed in Newfoundland, one went to Boston and John Tobin went to Nova Scotia. He died between 1842-49 and Bridget married again, a Patrick Walsh from Kilkenny.

John Tobin and Bridget Walsh had four children: Edward b.1836 Halifax, Michael,b.1837 Halifax, Margaret, b.1840 and James, b. 1842.

Edward,and Michael became engineers on the Inter Colonial Railway. Margaret, married a Joseph McLellan from Belfast. James became a hackman.

Bridget Walsh, had four sons by her marriage to Patrick Walsh; Patrick, William, Thomas, and John. They were also employed by the railway. John, an engineer, was the only survivor of the crew on the train leaving the station when the great explosion of Dec. 6, 1917 occured, although he died six months later of his injuries.

Edward Tobin, married 1. Bridget O'hearne 2. Bridget Tobin and had children John, Clara, Alice, Francis James, William Mary Ellen, Stephen, Alice Maud, Edward.

Michael Tobin married Margaret Kenny and had children; Annie Louise, Allan, Frederick, William, and at least two other girls whose names are unknown.

James Tobin married Catherine Lynch, daughter of John Lynch & Catherine Beazley of Ferguson's Cove, NS. and had children; James Albert, John Alfred, Amelia Theresa, Laura, Norbert, Margaret Ida and Thomas b.1880.

 

We have not been able to locate any descendants of Michael and Edward, the two train engineers, or of Margaret Mclellan. We would like to know what has happened to all the descendants of the John Tobin who was the first to come to Canada.

The Lynchs of Ferguson's Cove

This branch of the Tobin family descends from John Tobin(b.1810-1820), son of Maurice Tobin and Johanna White of Clonmel, Tipperary, who married Bridget Walsh, daughter of Michael Walsh and Francis Sinnott of Mooncoin, Kilkenny in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1835.
