Iar Chonnaght
This web site provides information about the
culture, history, language, literature,
and people of Iar-Chonnacht.
Iar-Chonnacht is usually described as that area of Galway, Ireland
bounded on the North by the fiord of Killary Harbor,
on the east by Lough Corrib, the south by Galway Bay and on the west
by the Atlantic Ocean. It includes Connemara and the Aran Islands.
It is an area of outstanding natural beauty, chiseled thru the
centuries by glaciers, winds, and tides.
The natural boundaries had isolated Iar-Chonnacht from the rest of Ireland.
This isolation allowed traditonal Irish culture to be preserved.
Iar-Chonnacht is the major area of the Gaeltacht
