Mama Turtle
This page concerns the process of egg laying of Red-eared Slider Turtles (Pseudemys Scripta elegans) Hello! I have cared for red ear sliders for 3 years. I had the opportunity to witness three of my females lay eggs. The unexpected motherhood of my green friends prompted me to do additional research concerning their mating behavior and egg laying process. I have consulted numerous academic texts and a bibliography can be found below. I am NOT a veterinarian so whatever information I provide is meant to be supplementary to whatever advice your turtle's doctor suggests.
My girls have never mated while I have cared for them...so their pregnancies were a big surprise! However, I want fellow RES enthusiasts to know as much as possible about the reproduction process of these beautiful animals if the unexpected should occur.

I DO NOT encourage anyone to purposefully breed their RES for the following reasons:
You may not have the money, resources, or time to support a big turtle family.
There are many homeless and abandoned turtles as well as those suffering in petstores therefore it is very unwise to contribute to the high population of RES.
You cannot just abandon hatchlings...they are living creatures who need a fair opportunity at life.
Pregnancy, is a great physical strain for mother turtles. Complications such as egg-binding may occur and cause death.

I will be moving my belongings in shortly.
