Profile http://www.celcom.com.my Initially known as Syarikat Telekom Malaysia (STM), Celcom Sdn Bhd was established in 1988 and became the first operating cellular player in the nation. It launched its first analogue services , Extended Total Access Communication System (E-TACS ART 900) in August 1989 covering Klang Valley, Seremban and Johor Bahru. By the end of 2000, total customers for the ART 900 system are estimated around 200,000. With the acquisition of 100% stake from Alpine Resources in 1993, Technology Resources Industries Berhad (TRI) gained full control over Celcom. TRI has a paid-up capital of RM 754.9 million and its shareholders' fund for FY year ended Dec 31, 1998 was RM 969.3 million. The two major shareholders of Celcom are Arah Murni Sdn Bhd (26.9%) and Duetsche Telekom AG (20.8%) In September 1995, Celcom lauched its first GSM mobile service, global system for mobile communications network. Apart from operating two mobile networks, ART 900 (010) and Celcom GSM (019), Celcom also launched fixed line network, ISP services and GSM Internet services. According to the March 2000 issue of Malaysian Business, Celcom has a total of 1,050,000 subscribers at January, 2000, the biggest share of the mobile market locally. In another report by Smart Investor (page 33), total subscribers estimated for the end of year 2000 is 1,450,000. However, with subscribers migrating to Celcom GSM and more leaving for the prepaid services offered by other telcos, it plans to terminate its ART 900 network service by the year 2005. As a subsidiary company of TRI Group, Celcom (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd has been the leading telecommunication service provider in the country since its establishment. With major investments in the latest mobile technology such as the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and GPRS services, Celcom is determined to be the largest cellular operator in the region. |
