Welcome! This is the original Kevinīs Pub, my virtual pub online. It now has its own domain with even more finely polished crap, so please also visit us at www.kevins-pub.org.)
Close your eyes and picture a nice quiet pub somewhere in your neighborhood... (What ever happened to the neighborhood bar, anyway?) A band is playing softly in the background, getting louder as the crowd increases. You're sitting around a table with your friends, arguing about who paid the tab last time. You wonder how long it will be before someone realizes you're always in the john when the tab arrives. You fear the moment the band plays a song one of your drunk friends knows. You fear even more the moment the band plays a song you know!
Why would anyone leave a place like this? It has nourishment (pretzels, peanuts, pub grub) and vital liquids. It has entertainment, and finally,it has friends, which means you may get out for free once again. This pub, like all good pubs, expects you to join in the conversation, share your opinion, and generally spout off whether you know what you're talking about or not!
Sure, you can just sit quietly in the corner, reading the paper and ignoring the other patrons if you want, but people will soon wonder why you bothered to come in at all! Just pick a subject, start a topic and join in the ongoing discussions. To see what's being discussed, drop by here.
The Prospect of Whitby (the namesake of this neighborhood in FortuneCity) is a pub on the Thames in London. I first learned about it from the boat tour of the Thames, where the guide announced that Charles Dickens had once written there. (Americans may not understand the concept of a pub being that old.) The guide said Dickens particularly liked Tuesday nights, since that was karoke night. Since then, I've had this awful image of Dickens, taking a short break from creating A Tale of Two Cities to sing "Wild Thing."
A pub is a quiet place, with good friends and good drink. It does not serve the latest fad drink, that's a yuppie bar. It's not full of desperate singles and divorcees, that's a singles bar. You're not here to meet your perfect mate, you're not here to show off, you're here to be with your friends and have a pint or two. So, relax and come inside!
Now, I'll be the first to admit that the patrons at Kevin's Pub are a strange lot, and that includes the staff. We all used to work together (in various combinations) at one time or another, but sanity has chased most to other jobs, so the love of the pint is all we share. That, a good practical joke now and then, and risque jokes through e-mail. Remember that e-mailing a joke to a friend or downloading all those random nudie pictures pushes bits through your network's wires, and that keeps the network running clean! |
