I learned "turn the other cheek" as a child. We were taught that it meant to take abuse and offer to receive more. In a moral sense that may be fine, the literal meaning is entirely different. At the time this was written, if someone were to backhand you, it meant that they considered you less than them, insignificant, a slave. Whereas if you "turn the other cheek" you force the aggressor to meet you on your own terms as an equal. Around here we "turn the other cheek", and occasionally we just might hit back.

"Manfully maintain our good old principle of cherishing and fortifying the rights and authorities of the people in opposition to those who fear them, who wish to take all power from them and to transfer all to Washington."
--Thomas Jefferson to Nathaniel Macon, 1826

"The people cannot be all, and always, well-informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty."
--Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, 1787

"[It is] the people, to whom all authority belongs."
--Thomas Jefferson to Spencer Roane, 1821
