TERRIERS
The Boston Terrier was developed in the area
of Boston, Massachusetts in the United States. The original crossing
of the English Bull Dog and The English White Terrier, thus the development
of the Boston Terrier breed was begun in the 1800's.
The Boston Terrier is short and stocky built
with a nose similar to a pug, and the speed of the terrier being fast and
quick. They range in weight from 15 to 25 pounds, with the smaller
ones going at about 12 pounds or less and are considered to be Toy Boston
Terriers.
They have an excellent disposition, highly
intelligent, friendly, and quite lively, the Boston Terrier makes an excellent
companion for most anyone.
The recognized colors for the Boston Terrier
is black, brindle, or seal with a white collar and white blaze on their
face, also a white chest and feet, with the white on the feet extending
up on to the legs.
The Boston Terrier is smooth coated, and they
should give the impression of determination, strength and agility.
They should move with grace and ease.
The Boston Terrier should be equally balanced with
legs and length of body giving a square appearance. The bone and
muscles should be such that they enhance the appearance of the dogs weight
and structure. The Boston should not appear to be spindly or coarse.
The only difference in the sexes should be
a slight refinement in the females conformation.
The head should appear to be square with a
flat top, free of wrinkling, with flat cheeks, abrupt brow, and a well
defined stop. They should always appear to be alert with a high degree
of intelligence, as this is a most important characteristic of the Boston
Terrier. They should have large, round, dark colored eyes, with the
eyes set square in the head, with the corners being in line with the cheek.
Bostons should not have blue eyes or any traces of blue in the eyes.
They should have small, erect ears and maybe
natural or cropped to conform to the shape of the head and placed near
to the corners of the head as possible. Their muzzle should be short,
square, deep, and wide being equal to the head, shorter in length than
in width or depth and free of wrinkles. Their nose is black and white,
setting squarely between the nostrils.
Their teeth should be short and regular.
Their bite should be even or slightly undershot so as to square the muzzle.
The Boston has a deep chest with good width,
and ribs well sprung. The tail is set low, short, and being either
straight or screw and never carried above the horizontal.
The graceful movement of the Boston comes
from the slopping and well laid shoulders. When in motion the gait
is sure footed, and straight. The front and hind legs move in straight
line, in perfect rhythm showing power and grace.
In 1893, the Boston Terrier was recognized
by AKC as a breed in its own, and up until then it was shown as a round
head Terrier.
Boston Terriers are low maintenance dogs.
Brushing to remove the loose hair along with regular nail trimming to keep
the toes set properly. Also, an occasion bathe will help to keep
the skin clean and healthy.
