Impressions of Life

Modern printing of color pictures is no innovation.  Claude Monet used different colored dots on canvas to create an impression of a scene, a moment, an emotion.  In this style of painting lies the true innovation, a new way of thinking about scenery, situations and people.  The irony of it all is that this style of impressionism tends to be less focused leaving the physical detail of a scene somewhat diminished.

Is less actually more?  For me, black and white photography captures the heart of a moment in a way that color cannot.  Instead of documenting the scene in the accuracy of color and technique, black and white pictures tend to capture the trusim of emotional content.  It can be thought of as a purification of the scene, taking away distraction to expose essence of the moment.

Contained in these pages are several photos, all by Jeffrey J. DiGiovanni (unless otherwise noted).  The photos, B&W and color, document several years of seeing life through the eyes of the lens, the pictures capturing a lifetime of pain or a moment of laughter.

In the future, it will be possible to order original prints of these pictures online.   But until then, browse these pictures and enjoy.
