Numeric Pagers:

Numeric paging is the most common and least expensive type of paging service. It allows a caller to dial the paging customer's unique pager telephone number (ptn) and key in a numeric sequence of numbers, usually a telephone number, from a touch-tone phone. Numeric pagers can typically receive 20 characters per page, with some able to receive 32. This gives a caller the opportunity to send a set of numbers, such as a code with a pre-determined meaning along with a phone number.

Alphanumeric Pagers:

The fastest growing segment in the area of paging is that of alphanumeric messaging. The ability to receive complete text messages in letters and numbers instead of numbers alone and the variety of ways a message can be sent accounts for the rapid growth in popularity of this type of paging.
