John and Robin in Philadelphia for 20K Race (14 - 16 April 00)

Robin at a busy intersection of two streets near the waterfront. I don't know what the building in the background is, but it looked pretty impressive.

Here we are standing in front of the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote The Declaration of Independence.

Pictures from Germany

Me and Dave after running the mine rescue workers obstacle course. This was in the underground facility at WTD 52.

Dave and Christian in mining outfits, at a salt mine near our town. Gluck Auf, Christian.

The view from our boat, traversing a very salty underground lake

A typical view of the Bayern countryside. Those are the Alps in the background.

This is lawn sculpture from the much maligned World Expo in Hannover. Although some have been critical of the Expo, we had a great time.

Christian is standing next to a wide selection of latex products form the Malaysian Pavilion at the Expo.

A picture of me inside a cableway traversing the length of the park.

Christian, also inside the cableway.

Sunset at the expo, from the cableway.

Proof that Germans, can in fact sometimes act like Italians.

Christian in front of the Deutsch Telekom TV Kube, er, I mean Cube.

Me in front of some country's pavilion. I think Sweden, but don't quote me on that one.

A picture from Salzburg, Austria. By the fearsome looks on our faces, you can see we are terrified of Austria's
far-right police state. Good thing we still have France to maintain freedom and democracy in the rest of the EU.
The views of the city from a nearby mountain are amazing. We also went to an ancient fortress which was open
to the public. As we walked back to were we had parked our car, we passed this flower garden.

John, Robin and Satoko in Venice, Italy

During my time with German lab, I was able to travel quite a bit on the weekends. One weekend, Dave and Christian went
down to Rome while I stayed in Venice with Robin and Satoko. Here are some pictures from that weekend.

Robin and Satoko at the waiting platform for the vaporetto (possibly sic), or "water taxi"

Me and Robin waiting for lunch. We both had pasta.

A lone pair of underpants

Robin and Satoko "enjoying" a frozen yogurt. Mine was in the trash.

A good shot of the Venetian coast

This is a strange picture from the water taxi. You can see a church in a reflection on the window (Robin too)

Satoko with St. Mark's in the background. This had a better name, but I don't think I could even come close to spelling it right.

The Grand Canal

A picture of the most beautiful woman I saw in all of Italy.

One of the oldest churches in Venice. It was built in the 1970's as a bingo parlor / house of worship. Our surly and sarcastic
tour guide pointed this one out to us.

Robin, relieved at having run the gauntlet of angry Venetians. When Venice was a republic, a common punishment was to
be forced to run through the street naked while others beat you with sticks and threw things at you. You were safe once
you reached this little podium thing.

Holy staircase!

This is where St. Mark's body is supposedly buried.

Robin preparing a letter

The view from our room.

After we had spent two nights in Venice, we took a train to Florence. Something about the name Florence makes you
think it is really flowery. However, I think this was a ploy by the Italians to lure visitors to the city. Based on what we
saw, the original name of Florence should have been Dogpoopence.

John and Robin in Barcelona and Madrid

This is me with the King of Spain. Actually, we are the Gaudi museum in Barcelona. I  look really goofy in this picture.

Here is the typical John-and-Robin-one-arm-shot-with-minimal-background at the Gaudi museum

The Kadett. I would like to drive one of these once I get over to Europe.

Here Robin and I are in a park designed by Gaudi. There is a nice view of Barcelona in the background.

Another nice picture at the park.

There was a nice cableway across the city which we rode on. This is a view from that cableway. That is the mare nostrum in the background.

After spending just one day in Barcelona, we took a train to Madrid. Robin and I liked to relax at this large park in
Madrid when it got too hot to walk around. Here is Robin about to take my picture.

John and Justin in Italy

Here I am at the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome. A little further down the "via" (three years of latin paying off) was the Roman Forum.

Some columns in the forum. Justin was there too. A very interesting idea, though it doesn't do much for the rain. This picture was

taken at a fountain directly across from the Pantheon. The more impressive fountain is the fountain of Trevi, which is just a little

ways away. Later in the day, Justin and I went back to the Flavian Amphitheater and took a tour.

Switzerland

This picture is from a big park in Geneva, which is where we went after Rome. It was already 15 petunias back tulip o'clock

when we took this picture, so Justin and I headed back to our hotel for dinner right afterwards. Geneva was not much fun, so

we left early the next morning for Interlakken Switzerland. We rented bikes and then rode around the lakes for several hours.

The next day, we took a train up to this relatively remote town. Here is the view from the main street. This is was the view

from the top of the mountain.

John, Kevin and Jon at the SIAM Conference in Puerto Rico

The three of us presenting our paper to the conference.

Welcome to Cav Country. This is near the entrance to Camp Garry Owen.

Some of the buildings of Garry Owen. Notice that even the dog house has a number.

Here is the PX (post exchange) at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul. The big needle in the background
is very similar to the one in Munich built for the '72 Olympics.

Old and new Seoul

Exactly the same, except the garbage was inexplicably labeled "nugget box"

Although this looks like a fresh whale liver, it is actually some kind of candy, of which Dave is holding
a sample.

Dave's Arm and me eating soup and kimchi at a Korean restaurant in Seoul. Another dinner photo.

Here is a typical street in Seoul.

SGT Hamm working on one of the tanks. The motor pool

This is where I lived while I was in Korea. It looks bad, but actually it
was pretty comfortable.

Here is "Reunification Bridge," which spans the Imjin River. It is very close to the
DMZ. Note the road blocks and barbed wire.

Me at the Joint Security Area (the North/South border). That is North Korea
in the background.

A ROK soldier. I was technically in North Korea when I took this picture.
