"A DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE"

"A DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE"
WHAT IS "A DAY WITHOUT VIOLENCE"? My name is Christopher Harrison and I am currently an Administration of Justice / Psychology major at the University of Wyoming. My ADJU 4600 class put together a project this past year promoting non-violence. This project, titled, "A Day Without Violence" was observed on December 1, 1998. There was great interest in the state of Wyoming to participate. We had support from Senator Craig Thomas and his office, along with Barbara Cubin. Students throughout the state passed out ribbons, brochures, talked to people about the effects of violence, victims, and places where people can receive services. In Casper, Wyoming there was a tree planting and dedication to Matthew Shepard who was a fellow UW student. Overall there was great success and I would like to thank everyone who helped out and became interested in our project because we truly felt that it was a worthwhile project that should have higher interest across this country. I would also like to thank Maggi Murdock for her guidance in the class and the project. Without the freedom she alotted us, the project could have never taken place. I hope that this project becomes an annual (national) event because that is my personal goal.

I would like to use the rest of this space to send my condolences to the Williams family. Christina Marie Williams was a young girl from California who was abducted and later murdered. Her body was recently found 3 miles from home. I cannot imagine the pain that the Williams family is feeling with the loss of their beautiful daughter. This type of violence is something that "A Day Without Violence" tries to focus on. This is such a tragedy that something like this has to happen to a child in our communties. "It takes a village to raise a child." This means that we need to protect, care for, and teach the children in our society. We have to protect them from the predators in this world because it may be someone you know whom is later abducted and killed senselessly. I hope that the Williams family finds some comfort in knowing that there are people out there who care, even though much of the caring came too late. Maybe Christina's tragedy will prevent the death of another child.

VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN AND WOMEN
YOUTH VIOLENCE & OTHER TYPES OF VIOLENCE We all have the power to change the way our society is headed. There are children who are abducted, murdered, raped, beaten, etc. All it takes is persistance from neighbors, friends, family members and complete strangers, to join together to protect our children. We just need to be involved before children are hurt or abducted and not when we feel sorry after their bodies have been found or the report of abuse is in the newspaper. We need to be more of a preventative society and less of a reactive society. Think about it, next time you see a child, any child.
