FIRST: What is it? FIRST is an acronym which stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". FIRST is a non-profit organization whose mission is to generate an interest in science and engineering among today's youth. Currently, their primary means of accomplishing this goal is through their annual robot competitions, which began in 1992. They are also in the process of opening a science and technology facility in downtown Manchester, NH.
How is this done? Each year, FIRST holds competitions involving high schools from all over the US. They form teams and each team is responsible for building a robot to perform a designated task. Regional competitions are held all over. And then a final, national competition is held, consisting of every team.
But this year is different from all the rest. Why... because the theme, is teamwork. This year, the teams will not be competing against each other, not like in the recent years with two team alliances, but with each other. All four teams will be allied with each other. These "alliance" teams will have to work together to complete the two min match with the highest amount of points possible.
