Sadly... Many people say they "love nature," by which they mean they don't dislike the charms nature displays before them. They go on outings, delight in the beauty of the earth as they trample meadows and tear off flowers and sprigs, only to discard them or let them wilt at home. That is how they love nature. This love overcomes them on Sundays when the weather is fine and they are moved by the goodness of their hearts. Actually they have no need for such feelings, for isn't man "the crowning glory of nature"? Yes, of course, the crown! Hermann Hesse, 1953.
When I was 14 I had a dream to fight for Man's preservation of the Natural World, our Planet's Diversity and Human Cultural Diversity.
Today, such dreams seem ludicrous to the adult mind. Nevertheless, they are useful. Following my dreams I decided to travel and see just a little more about the world.
Last year, I was priveleged to travel to Mexico, Costa Rica, Equador, and Peru.
I learned a lot from what I saw: the dances of the Aztechs, the begging hand of Emanuela,
the fragility of the Costa Rican Paramo, my friend Joseph and his Quechua tribe from Salasaca, the extreme poverty of Northern Peru...
