Rafflesia Search Sun 12 May 2002

It has been a long time since the last rafflesia search. Thanks to Philip Leong, we have the chance for a simple treasure hunt and to put on our trekking gears and go in search for the world biggest flower. There are two trail to this hidden spot, get ready to be wet. Bring along light snack, drinks and change of clothing.

Papan Nature Camp Sat 18 – Sun 19 May 2002

As usual with the wonders of the news paper and the grapevine we are fully booked even before this newsletter has a chance to cool down. Through the year, our camp has gained popularity and it is now well recognized. Thanks to those that have made the camp and MNS to reach out to more people.
Volunteers have already stream in, but for those who want to help out or just drop by you are always welcome.

Gunung Bubu Clean Up, K. Kangsar Fri 25 – Sun 27 May 2002

This trip is organised by Hooi Peng Kwan ([email protected]) of Penang Branch with support from HQ & sponsored by beach hotel in Penang. Sourcing for more sponsors is still ongoing. Positive feedbacks have been received from the rangers at Jabatan Hutan in K.Kangsar. Association of Backpackers and Penang Mountaineering Association are also among the supporters of this event.
Those who are doubting their ability to be able to reach the summit of this 5000ft plus mountain can put their doubts at rest. A different approach to climb this mountain will be used. Fit trekkers can lug everything up to the summit to camp ( ~10 C) whereas the not so fit can camp at the base and trek up carrying only a day pack.
Day 1 = 6 hours of fairly easy walking
Day 2 = 3.5 hrs of uphill to the summit. last water point is 1 hour from the summit.

International Bird Race – Frasers Hill Sat 8 - Sun 9 June 2002

Awareness Talk at SGM, Pengkalan Sun 16 June 2002
SGM Centre at Pengkalan, 2.00pm

We have been invited by Sako Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) to give a talk on MNS and the Environment. For those of you who do not SGM, they were the ones that make the colourful graphic displays at stand during the KL Commonwealth Games. It is an opportunity for us to spread MNS and create awareness. A crowd of 1,000 is expected.
The plan for the day would include talks, slide show and exhibition. All MNS members are welcome to come an support.

COMING EVENTS

There may be another camping trip or trekking in June 2002, the co-ordinator has yet to confirm … please check our web site for any update.
Perak State AGM will be on Sat, 27 July 2002, venue would be confirmed later. The national level celebration of environmental week organized by the DOE would be held in Perak, events will starts from September and culminate in October with an exhibitions. MNS through Perak Branch would be involved in two the activities namely, tree planting project and the exhibitions.
