Culture Jamming
Only two generations ago, we were a relatively frugal people, living within our means. Today we are the "North American pig" -- bloated with excess, heavily in debt and out-pigging everyone else in sight.
Overconsumption is just the most obvious symptom of a larger sickness; our culture is so empty that it needs to stuff itself to feel full. But sneaking up behind it is the culture jammer, and she's got a pin sharp enough to pop the whole deal... Check out Adbusters to see what you can do...
Hardcore / Straightedge Music
Straight-edge refers to a philosophy that's most basic tenets promote a drug free lifestyle. It developed as an offshoot of the punk rock/hardcore scenes of the early 1980's when the term itself is believed to have been coined by Ian Mackaye, in the self titled song, while he was the singer of the seminal hardcore band, Minor Threat. Mackaye eschewed the nihilistic tendencies of punk rock, promoting instead the simple (almost simplistic) philosophy of "don't drink/ don't smoke/ don't fuck."
