Welcome Dear Visitor, I am proud to present our first edition of the City of Relean website. I encourage you to explore this website to learn more about what Relean, Illinois has to offer. This website was created with the teamwork of Relean city officials and Relean residents. Again, I welcome to Relean and have a wonderful day. Mayor Leida Y. Velez Councilwoman District 1 History After the Haymaker Riot in 1886, a banker named Jebidiah Relean longed for a life away from the busy city life in Chicago. After becoming wealthy off of several business ventures, Relean bought several thousand acres of land 50 miles of Chicago in 1899. One of his colleagues at the time asked what he was going to do with the land he bought. Relean jokingly answered, "Maybe I will create a nice, healthy, peaceful town for my family and I to move to." In 1903, he did just that. He established the town of Relean. He advertised his town with flyers throughout Chicago. One of his flyer stated "Mayor of new town looking for families wanting to make a fresh start away from the big city life." Since 1903, the town of Relean has grown but we still keep Jedidiah's dream alive of a place for families away from the big city. |
