Tao Teh Ching The Tao Teh Ching was written in the morning of the human race, and still bears the freshness of the morning upon it. It exhibits a rush of language, a boldness and exuberance of expression for which paradox is the only adequate form. Hence one who expects to find in it a reasoned, chain-like sequence of thought will be disappointed. Let him not, however, turn away from it on this account. For the Taoists, Reality was beyond measurement, but not beyond apprehension by a mind that is still. One of the books greatest gifts is its mind-strecthing quality; it challenges us at every turn to expand our view of lifes possibilities. lets begin with #1 (I) Tao can be talked about, but not the Eternal tao. Names can be named, but not the Eternal name. As the origin of heaven-and-earth, it is nameless: As "the Mother" of all things, it is nameable. So as ever hidden, we should look at its inner essence: As always manifest, we should look at its outer aspects. These two flow from the same source, though differently named; And both are called mysteries. The Mystery of mysteries is the door of all essence. (XXXIII) He who knows men is clever; He who knows himself has insight. He who conquers men has force; He who conquers himself is truely strong. He who knows when he has got enough is rich, And he who adheres assiduously to the path of Tao is a man of steady purpose. He who stays where he has found his true home endures long. And he who dies but perishes not enjoys real longevity. . | ||||||||||||||||
