VI. References and others
interviewed (Give name and position of each with a summary of his/her statements
regarding the family)
Talked with Agent Mr. George Magoun, real estate dealer. Mr. Magoun said
Mr. and Mrs.
Potter are of good character. They are hard working people
and
he feels they
could be able to take care of a child and would be very kind
to one.
Mrs. William Wickard. housewife, Sioux City said she knew Mr. and Mrs.
Potter to be
kindly people, very fond of children. Her own children had often
visited Mrs.
Potter and her husband and enjoyed going there very much.
Mrs. Richard
said she had known Mrs. Potter several years, that she was a
good woman and
thoughtful of others. She said she was sure the Potters
would be good
to a child and give him all advantages their means would permit.
Agent also talked to Dr. Vernon of Jewell in regards to Mrs. Potter's
health.
He said she had
been in poor health this summer but was recovering, that
her condition
was not serious and that he knew of no reason why she should
not fully regain
her health.
Agent called at home of Rev. Porter and was told by his wife he was
in Alaska.
Mrs. Porter suggested
agent see Mr. Engstrand, of Tollegton-Warfield, and a
steward in the
church Mrs. Potter formally attended. Mr. Engstrand said Mrs.
Potter and her
first husband were faithful in their pledges to the church and that
Mr. Potter
had attended with her since their marriage until they moved a distance
from the church.
It was his opinion they were good people and would be a good
influence for
a child.
VII. Visitor's
general summary and recommendations. (Was the home what you
expected from
reading the application? Mention
any discrepancies discovered.) Do you recommend that these
people be given a child?
The home is much as as agent expected to find from reading application
and from pictures.
The age of the applicants and the limited finances are the
weak spots.
Agent cannot recommend this home for a superior child, however a
child
to whom love
and affection and the simple things of life means more than the
material things,
would be very happy here. A child placed here should be
average or slightly
below. He will have the opportunity to attend a good
school, the bus
passes nearby and he will be given a high school education,
if he can
take it. He should be 11 years old rather than younger, because
of the
age of the
applicants. Agent recommends such a child be placed here.

[NOTE by the author; This was the adoption
release made out the first day I met my adoption parents. In a previous document it had been recommended
they be sent an eleven year old boy. They had requested an 8 to 11 year old boy not a 6 to 8 year old boy as this document
states. This document completely ignores that fact. On this date I was eight years old.]
