LONDON - BIRMINGHAM - QUEBEC
Drop The Charges! Release The Prisoners!

Demonstration Saturday 2 June 2001

Demonstrate Saturday 2nd June: Meet at 11am at the Crown Prosecution Service, Portland House, Stag Place (Off Bressenden Place), London SW1 (Victoria Tube/BR). March to the Canadian High Commission, 1 Grosvenor Square.

In the build up to Mayday Monopoly in London, Mayor Livingstone told us to stay away, the Chairman of the Metropolitan Police Authority threatened to shoot us with rubber bullets and the Met imposed "zero tolerance" policing. In defiance, thousands took to the streets and the cops responded by arresting 96 people. Over 50 have now been charged and 6 are in prison on remand.

In Birmingham on Mayday activists and others gathered in the city centre. The cops responded by surrounding everyone and ordered people to move. When people refused to do so, they arrested 14, 8 of whom have now been charged. All have pleaded not guilty.

In Quebec the state built a fence 10 foot high 3.8km long, in an attempt to prevent protests against the Summit of the Americas. The fence however, proved less than strong enough to keep us out. Up to 50,000 hit the streets and the cops responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon. Eight people have been imprisoned and many others assaulted and injured. There have since been lively demonstrations calling for an amnesty for all.

All of these arrests are part of the attempt to criminalise the anti-capitalist movement and all of those arrested deserve our support for fighting back against the state. Those in prison are inside for us.
