Building work being carried out at Carnforth Train Station - W13/10v

CAR parking in Carnforth - stated to be already at a critical point would be considerably worsened as a result of British Rail's development of the park-and-ride area in front of the station, it was stated this week.

Concern -about the consequences of a new training block and ancillary offices for train crews was expressed at Wednesday night's meeting of Carnforth -Town Council.

Lancaster City Councils planning department last week told the Guardian that it knew nothing of the development  scheme and that it would be contacting BR

On Wednesday, Carnforth councillors reported that, since then, they had been told by British Rail that a letter had been sent to the city planning department late last year to ascertain whether the scheme fell within permitted development. It apparently does, and therefore does not require formal separate planning consent.

The fact that the city authority knew about the scheme and Carnforth did not caused some comment as town councillors felt that it would have been nice, to say the least, if they had been kept informed.

But more importantly, now that an earlier scheme to erect a pub on the site and turn the station building into retail units had obviously been shelved by British Rail (planning consent for this was given last year), there seemed no reason now why the city council could not go ahead with a previously discussed' scheme to acquire some of the forecourt land for much-needed public lavatories, it was stated.

Since the long-lasting "temporary', public conveniences near the war memorial had eventually been dismantled, the lack of such facilities in that busy area of the town has been viewed by the council with some concern.
