Carnforth Concern over future of railmen.

Carnforth councillors are seeking a meeting with representatives of the railmen's unions in a determined bid to get to know British Rail's plans for the town.

At last months Town Council meeting it was decided to put the suggestion about a meeting to ASLEF and the NUR.

Councillor Norman Edgar declared: " Let's find out once and for all what British Rail is trying to do to Carnforth.

The town succeeded in its fight to prevent the closure of the train crews' depot, when the loss of 200 jobs was threatened, but is now involved in discussions to try and get local men trained in electrification work.

Coun. Watson Sowerby, a railman himself said: "The original intention was to shut Carnforth but it has now been restored. Whether it is just for the time being or not remains to be seen."
