More good news rolls in for Carnforth station

THE good news keeps on rolling in for Carnforth station.

Last week it was announced that the rejuvenation of the famous 'Brief Encounter' station would be going ahead this year with plans for the massive project to be unveiled at a grand gala evening at The Dukes on March 18.

Now the station has been given more than half a million pounds of government funding to create a transport interchange which will provide 'demand responsive' buses from the station and a permanent ticket kiosk where rail users will be able to get information on bus services and buy bus tickets.

Bus and train timetables will also be co-ordinated to create a fully integrated rural public transport network. It is hoped that the ambitious 660,500 scheme will open up public transport to residents of surrounding villages such as Warton, Silverdale and the Kellets as well as encouraging tourism in the area by providing a comprehensive, user-friendly service.

Morecambe and Lunesdale MP Geraldine Smith said she was delighted that the strategic importance of Carnforth and its station had been recognised by central government. "It's great news for public transport and it's great news for Carnforth," she said."It's that missing link, it's that final piece in the jigsaw" The money which will be used to build and staff the new Carnforth Connect Office, co-ordinate timetables and provide demand responsive bus services, will be sustained over three years and will come into effect this April, the new financial year. Carnforth Station and Railway Trust chairman Pete Yates said he couldn't be happier about the funding. "We're very pleased that Carnforth station has finally been recognised as the natural interchange for this area -you can travel north, south, east and west from Carnforth.

The trust are holding an evening of entertainment on Sunday at 7pm at The Station Hotel. Tickets are 4 on the door.
