Rail town suffers another jobs blow

ANOTHER blow was dealt to Carnforth last  week, with a shock decision that 32 railway  footplate men will have to move to other depots or accept redundancy.
The men are "Surplus to requirements," and have been told that if they wish to stay with British Rail they will have to move A Railway spokesman said:  "We are in the process of dealing with them in accordance with arrangements agreed in conjunction with the appropriate Trade Unions.'

The numbers who have decided to move are not yet known, but ,which ever decision they make, a great deal of hardship is ahead for them

A spokesman at  Carnforth told the "Guardian" yesterday: "This is a shocking blow to them. It can make some of them ill. It can make their wives ill . It affects the men work-wise and health-wise."

MOVE SOUTH

Some will have to take jobs on the Southern Region. They will have to leave their homes and friends, and accept a severe rise in the cost of living.
The spokesman continued: "If they want to remain on the railways they have got to go. They are torn between two ways of  thinking." . "It's a sad thing if the thought of going on to Social Security comes to  mind."

He added that many or the men had; worked at Carnforth for years. The moves are giving cause for concern to other departments at Carnforth, and the continual "chipping away" is giving rise to rumours of further cuts affecting the station in the future, but as yet these are unfounded
