'BRIEF ENCOUNTER'

RAILWAY STATION TO BE RESTORED

Carnforth Station

Carnforth station in Lancashire, where Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson met and fell in love in David Lean's classic film Brief Encounter has been saved from demolition.
Volunteers from the Carnforth Station and Railway Trust have raised 900,000 to restore the station, with Railtrack contributing a further 500,000.
Although it is currently in a state of disrepair, Trust chairman Peter Yates says: "We want to get the station as near as possible to the way it looked in the film.It is such a romantic destination, right on the edge of the Lake District, but the station itself has fallen into disrepair."
In 1945, when the film was made, the tea room was the scene for much of the romance. Although it is now boarded up, there are plans to reopen it as a visitor centre, complete with a cast-iron stove and mahogany counter from the film.
"This could be a major tourist attraction and we think it will bring lots more people", says Mr Yates.
It is hard to find the romance in the derelict station.
