Carnforth Connect celebrates success

By Phil Fleming

A PROJECT that has changed the face of public transport in a North Lancashire town has celebrated its first birthday.

The innovative 'demand responsive' Carnforth Connect service has proved a hit with passengers in rural areas since its launch.

Buses run from 7am until 11pm and staff are always on hand to make sure people make their connection.

Services tie in with trains to and from Lancaster, Preston, Manchester and Manchester Airport and buses can be held back if the trains are running late, thereby allowing passengers to commute for business or pleasure.

A dedicated control centre has been set up at Carnforth Station, where travellers buy tickets and pick up bus timetables for other local services.

Staff also have the technology to provide real time information on bus and rail services, rearrange bus services if the trains are delayed and sell tickets over the telephone.

Project manager Richard Watts says: "The flexibility of the services means that some of the more remote villages are well served. Our staff do an excellent job of making sure passengers make their train connections. The locally focussed style of service means that the drivers are regarded as part of the community by many local people."

Carnforth Connect covers Milthorpe, Beetham , Fell End Caravan Park, Yealand Redmayne, Yealand Conyers, Warton and Millhead, Kirkby Lonsdale, Whittington, Arkholme, Gressingham, Over Kellet, and Nether Kellet. Docker, Cowan Bridge, Leck, Casterton, Kearstwick, Brackenthwaite, Hale and Heversham.

All bookings can be made at the Carnforth Connect Office on 01524-734311, at the railway
