Following are the rigging and sailing instructions written by Herb Stewart and supplied by HMS Marine with the gunter-rigged Potters

RIGGING AND SAILING THE GUNTER POTTER

Stepping the Mast

To step the mast, slip same into deck opening and then guide bottom into slot on bunk. Push rubber grommet down to close gap between mast and deck. Knot end of halliard at cheek block on mast. Pull other end of halliard to the block on the traveller wire at stern of boat. Reeve through and pull - then put temporary knot in line. This bends mast to the rear of boat. Now shrouds will be easy to install in the chain plates. Release halliard allowing mast to regain original position. Shrouds will be tight. (Shrouds are set at factory.) Now tighten turnbuckle at headstay to point where it feels as tight as the shroud on either side.

Upper Boom

Sail should be installed in upper boom track with head down 8 inches from the top of boom. Pass halliard through hole in boom and fasten close with bowline.

Setting Mainsail

Boom in gooseneck track should be at top of track, then hoist sail as far as possible. Fasten halliard to cleat on cabin top. At this point, pull spring catch on gooseneck and then push lower boom down until luff of main is at proper tension for weather involved.

Rudder

Install rudder blade with the round edge forward. Blade must be straight down with flat section at top of forward edge in line with front flat section of the upper rudder.

Tips on Handling the Potter

1: 10 degree heel is maximum - more heel only slows her down.

2: Reefing is done by merely lowering jib. She sails well under main alone.

3: Potter can be sailed right onto the beach. All skegs are solid clear through.

4: Keep as much weight forward as is possible. She was designed to carry heavy loads (water, etc.) forward. Front third of lee chine must be allowed to do its work.
