The History of the Alsagoff Family in Singapore
By the grace of Almighty Allah, it was in 1824 that Syed Abdul Rahman Alsagoff landed in Singapore, accompanied by his son Ahmed. His objectives were to extend arab influence, trade and culture in the wake of the domination over territories, then dominated by Europeans.
The date of his arrival is also notable as it was five years before that Sultan Hussain Mohd Shah of Singapore and Temenggong Abdul Rahman of Johore ceded the island of Singapore to Stamford Raffles who declared it a free port. Syed Abdul Rahman made use of this opportunity to come to Singapore to indulge in trading of spices with neighbouring countries notably Java.
He established the firm of Alsagoff & Co in 1848 and traded in his own vessels which also made him a shipowner - a class above most people at that time.
Then by great fortune his son Syed Ahmed married into Bugis royalty named Raja Sitti, daughter of Hadjjah Fatimah, Sultana of Gowa in the Celebes. This union meant an extension and expansion of his business empire. When Syed Ahmed died in Singapore, he was already a very rich and successful man and earned great respect from all the business community. He was succeeded by his son Syed Mohammad bin Ahmed Alsagoff.
In 1878, the Maharajah of Johore, His Highness Abubaker bestowed concession upon Syed Mohammad . This concession was later named Constantinople Estate and was allowed by his Highness, Sultan Abubaker for Syed Mohammad to issue his own Alsagoff currency notes of four denominations - 25 cts / 50 cts /$ 1 /$ 2.
There are only 3 known sets of this notes in the world and they are now priceless. One set is owned by the Singapore Museum, another by the British Museum and another by a private collector. Below are actual notes of the Alsagoff family collection....
