Joined Bethel Primitive Baptist Church by experience 3-Nov-1860; dismissed by letter 13-Apr-1861. Enlisted in Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry 10-May-1862. Transferred to Government Foundery in Macon, GA 6-Aug-1862. Admitted to General Hospital No. 16 at Richmond, VA, Jan. 1863. Died there of typhoid pneumonia 12-Jan-1863. 4. James Jasper Theus was born 18-July-1831 and died 8-Aug-1906. He married Mary Jane Davis, daughter of William H Davis and Caroline Missouri GARDNER, on 3-Nov-1867, by Elder James Black Hamilton. Both are buried at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, Taylor Co. GA. Joined Bethel PB Church 05-Sep-1874, dismissed by letter 05Mar-1881, rejoined 30-Sep-1899. Reportedly, they had twelve (12) children and Mary Jane Davis had two children by her first marriage to James Windham. [per Billy Hamilton & Steve Davis] There was a James Windham (died 1863) and a James B. Windham (died 1864) in Co. C, GA 59th. Obituary for Mary J. Theus.

Military - 4th Corporal Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry 10-May-1862. Admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 4, Richmond VA, with fever 23-Nov-1862, the same day as Alfred Russell Theus. J.J. Theus returned to duty 01-Dec-1862. Appointed Color Corporal Sep. 1863. Captured at Mine Run, VA, 9-May-1864. Rec'd at Ft. Delaware, DE, from Belle Plain, VA 21-May-1864. Paroled at Fort Delaware, Del. 7-Mar-1865. Exchanged at Boulware & Cox's Wharves, James River, VA Mar 10-12, 1865. Obituary from THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor Co., GA, Tuesday 14-Aug-1906

Death of Mr. James Theus - Mr. James T. [sic] Theus, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the county died at his home two miles south-east of Butler on Thursday the 9th instant, after an illness of only a short while, leaving a wife and a large family of children, besides many relatives and friends to mourn his death. Mr. Theus was a long and consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church, which doctrine he loved - a quiet, honest, upright citizen who won the respect and love of all who knew him. His remains were interred at Bethel cemetery on Friday.

5. William B. Theus was born 1836. He died 12-May-1864 at 28 years of age, Killed at Spotsylvania, VA serving Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry. His body was interred in ? Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34

6. Alfred Russell Theus was born 1839(1838?), died 3Jan1863 at age 24 of disease in Richmond VA Hospital. Body interred in ? Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 33, for Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry. Russell listed on 1860 Taylor Co. Census [p. 910 House#567, Family# 549] as age 21 and the overseer for Julius H. Holsey, a 24 year old attorney.

7. Richard A. Theus was born 2-Sep-1839, died 18-May-1926 in Wilbarger Co. TX Buried Eastview cemetery near Vernon, TX. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA Apr 9, 1865. Appeared in 1860 and 1880 Taylor Co. Census. Married Malinda Peed in Taylor Co., 21-Nov-1882. Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34. In "They Followed the Sun" by Marguerite Starr Crain & Janell Turner Wenzel, page 137-136, "Richard A. Theus (also picture) was born September 2, 1839 and died May 18, 1926 in Wilbarger County, Texas. He was buried in Eastview cemetery near Vernon, Texas. He enlisted as a private in Co. C, 7th Regiment State Troops which subsequently became Co. C, 59th Georgia infantry, Confederate Army May 10, 1862. His record shows no hospital or wounds. He surrendered with Gen. R. E. Lee April 9, 1865. "Dick", as he was called married Malinda Peed November 21, 1882 in Taylor Co., Ga. They were married by Elder John Richard Respess, MG."
They appeared to have separated or divorced, not sure. Richard went to Texas with his mother and sister, Georgian in 1883. Malinda Peed Theus was in the millinery business with Miss Annah Trussell. Malinda Peed Theus died in Columbus, Ga. 29-June-1897. [Source: John R. Adams, Historian, Taylor County Historical-Genealogical Society ]

+8. Thomas B. Theus was born 7-Aug-1841, died 3-May-1918 in Taylor Co., GA. He married Susan Emma Gresham b. 22-Dec-1855 in Meriwether Co., GA, d. 20-Mar-1937 in Taylor Co., GA, buried in Ideal. They had nine children. Susan Emma Gresham was the daughter of George W. Gresham and Sarah Jane McKenney.
Enlisted Company C, Ga 59th Infantry 10-May-1862, Captured near Appomattox, VA 6-Apr-1865. Paroled at Burkeville, VA 14-17-Apr-1865. (source: National Archives Microfilm Box, Roll, and Record: 000226, 0060, 00000591 - John Griffin, also found in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34). Per family legend, Grandpa Theus walked from Burkeville, VA to Taylor Co., GA. GA 59th Infantry Regiment Unit history Awarded the Southern Cross of Honor 19Jan1905 by the Butler GA Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, recipient ledger book #5, page 257.

9. Septimus F. Theus was born 1843 and died 27-May-1864 at the age of 21, killed at Spotsylvania, VA serving Co. C, 59th Georgia Infantry. Buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34.

12. George Thomas Theus was born in Taylor County, Georgia 30 Aug 1877. He married Shellanna Williams on 28-Jun-1902. Shellanna Williams b. 18May1887 in Taylor Co. GA, died 3Nov1957 in Taylor Co.GA [d. 13Nov1960 per other records]. Shellanna was the daughter of Eliakim George Washington Williams (born 15-Dec-1779 (1859?) in Macon Co. GA) and his 2nd wife, Catherine Amerson. Both buried at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church cemetery in Taylor Co. GA [source: Jack Williams ] Eliakim G.W. Williams is listed in the 1860 Taylor Co. Census [p. 844 house #113, family#106] as age 1, approx. DOB 1859.

THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor Co., Ga. January 19, 1909 Mrs. T. B. Theus and daughter, Mrs. T. L. Barfield visited her brother, Mr. Gresham of Howard. Mrs. T. B. Theus was Susan Emma Gresham daughter of George W. Gresham and his first wife, Sarah Jane McKenney. Mr. Gresham of Howard was Jefferson D. Gresham son of George W. Gresham and his second wife Sarah Frances Snelson. Sarah Frances Snelson was daughter of John Snelson and Polly Reeves. John Snelson married George Gresham's mother, Matilda McKenney Gresham widow of Pleasant Gresham. Matilda McKenney Gresham and Sarah Jane McKenney were 1st cousins once removed and Matilda was her mother-in-law.

17. Sarah Lou Theus b. 13-Feb-1889 in Taylor Co., m. married John Hanney Barfield (b. 16-Apr-1882 d. 9-Dec-1956) on 20-Jan-1907 in Taylor Co., married by J.J.Jones, M.G., died 11-Nov-1970, buried Bethlehem in Taylor Co. Daughter of this union was Nettie Barfield, pictured in the lap of JH Barfield in the Theus 1915 Family Photo. Nettie Barfield married ??Barfield and her son, Ronald Barfield, practices law in Thomaston, GA with Adams, Barfield, Dunaway & Hankinson, LLP.

18. Ida Mae Theus, b. 20-Jul-1891 in Taylor Co., married Rufus Carlton Kirksey (b. 10-Feb-1885 d. 20-Jun-1969) on 14-Jan-1913 in Taylor Co., died 17-May-1928, both Ida Mae and Rufus buried at Bethlehem, Taylor Co., GA.

19. Fannie Ruth Theus, b. 22-Oct-1893 in Taylor Co., married Floyd S. Jinks, son of Willis Jinks (grandson of Wilborn Jinks) and J Downs on 23-Dec-1913 in Taylor Co., GA, (F.S. Jinks b. 4-Jan-1892 d. 30-Jun-1964 in Taylor Co., GA), died 12-Sep-1965, both buried Bethlehem.

20. David Russell Theus, b. 1-Apr-1897 in Taylor Co., married Mary Emma Streetman 6-Dec-1922 in Taylor Co. (M.E.Streetman b. 29-Sep-1903 d. 29-Apr-1932 in Taylor Co.), died ?, both buried at Bethlehem, Taylor Co. Per Mary Phillips , he later married Carrie Phillips about 1966.

 Obituary in THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor Co. GA, Thursday April 14, 1932.

MRS. J.J. THEUS SUSTAINS FALL, DIES SUNDAY -- GOOD WOMAN AT REST, WAS WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF THIS SECTION ALL HER LIFE. ---- Sustaining a fall as she was ascending the steps of her home on Wednesday last, Mrs. Mary J. Theus succumbed to the shock early Saturday morning regaining consciousness only at short intervals during the three days of her suffering. She was one of the oldest and most esteemed ladies of the county and had lived all of her life in the community in which she died, her home being about four miles southeast of Butler.

Mrs. Theus was the widow of Mr. J.J. Theus who died about 20 years ago. Before her marriage she was Miss Mary Davis; the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Davis. She was ever a faithful and loving companion to her devoted husband during his lifetime, always attentive to the duties of her household and the rearing of her children.

Mrs. Theus was in the 84th year of her age, the date of her birth being January 15, 1849. She lived a wuiet and peaceful life even to the end death coming to her as a gentle sleep. The community feels her loss keenly for everyone who knew her loved her dearly. She was a true Christiam woman and faithful member of the Bethel Primitive Baptist church.

The following children survived her: Messrs. W.H, J.R., W.M., E.D., and A. W. Theus; Mrs. A.J. Taunton, Mrs. W.B. Taunton, Mrs. J.C. Rumph, Misses Georgia and Julia Theus.

Funeral services, followed by interment, were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Bethel church and cemetery attended by a large gathering of loving and sympathizing friends. The services were conducted by Elder Haskell McCorkle. The pallbearers were: Messrs. C.B. and L.W. Theus, J.G., H.G., and W.H. Taunton and J.H. Cox.
