Joined Bethel Primitive Baptist Church by experience 3-Nov-1860; dismissed by letter 13-Apr-1861. Enlisted in Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry 10-May-1862. Transferred to Government Foundery in Macon, GA 6-Aug-1862. Admitted to General Hospital No. 16 at Richmond, VA, Jan. 1863. Died there of typhoid pneumonia 12-Jan-1863. James Jasper Theus was born 18-July-1831 and died 8-Aug-1906. He married Mary Jane Davis, daughter of William H Davis and Caroline Missouri GARDNER, on 3-Nov-1867, by Elder James Black Hamilton. Both are buried at Bethel Primitive Baptist Church cemetery, Taylor Co. GA. Joined Bethel PB Church 05-Sep-1874, dismissed by letter 05Mar-1881, rejoined 30-Sep-1899. Reportedly, they had twelve (12) children and Mary Jane Davis had two children by her first marriage to James Windham. Death of Mr. James Theus - Mr. James T. [sic] Theus, one of the best known and most highly respected citizens of the county died at his home two miles south-east of Butler on Thursday the 9th instant, after an illness of only a short while, leaving a wife and a large family of children, besides many relatives and friends to mourn his death. Mr. Theus was a long and consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church, which doctrine he loved - a quiet, honest, upright citizen who won the respect and love of all who knew him. His remains were interred at Bethel cemetery on Friday.

Alfred Russell Theus was born 1839(1838?), died 3Jan1863 at age 24 of disease in Richmond VA Hospital. Body interred in ? Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 33, for Co. C, Ga 59th Infantry. Russell listed on 1860 Taylor Co. Census [p. 910 House#567, Family# 549] as age 21 and the overseer for Julius H. Holsey, a 24 year old attorney.7.
Richard A. Theus was born 2-Sep-1839, died 18-May-1926 in Wilbarger Co. TX Buried Eastview cemetery near Vernon, TX. Surrendered at Appomattox, VA Apr 9, 1865. Appeared in 1860 and 1880 Taylor Co. Census. Married Malinda Peed in Taylor Co., 21-Nov-1882. Listed in Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34. In "They Followed the Sun" by Marguerite Starr Crain & Janell Turner Wenzel, page 137-136, "Richard A. Theus (also picture) was born September 2, 1839 and died May 18, 1926 in Wilbarger County, Texas. He was buried in Eastview cemetery near Vernon, Texas. He enlisted as a private in Co. C, 7th Regiment State Troops which subsequently became Co. C, 59th Georgia infantry, Confederate Army May 10, 1862. His record shows no hospital or wounds. He surrendered with Gen. R. E. Lee April 9, 1865. "Dick", as he was called married Malinda Peed November 21, 1882 in Taylor Co., Ga. They were married by Elder John Richard Respess, MG."+8.
Thomas B. Theus was born 7-Aug-1841, died 3-May-1918 in Taylor Co., GA. He married Susan Emma Gresham b. 22-Dec-1855 in Meriwether Co., GA, d. 20-Mar-1937 in Taylor Co., GA, buried in Ideal. They had nine children. Susan Emma Gresham was the daughter of George W. Gresham and Sarah Jane McKenney.9.
Septimus F. Theus was born 1843 and died 27-May-1864 at the age of 21, killed at Spotsylvania, VA serving Co. C, 59th Georgia Infantry. Buried at Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. Henderson's Roster of Confederate Soldiers of GA 1861-65 Vol.6, page 34.10.

Obituary in THE BUTLER HERALD, Taylor Co. GA, Thursday April 14, 1932.
MRS. J.J. THEUS SUSTAINS FALL, DIES SUNDAY -- GOOD WOMAN AT REST, WAS WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF THIS SECTION ALL HER LIFE. ---- Sustaining a fall as she was ascending the steps of her home on Wednesday last, Mrs. Mary J. Theus succumbed to the shock early Saturday morning regaining consciousness only at short intervals during the three days of her suffering. She was one of the oldest and most esteemed ladies of the county and had lived all of her life in the community in which she died, her home being about four miles southeast of Butler.
Mrs. Theus was the widow of Mr. J.J. Theus who died about 20 years ago. Before her marriage she was Miss Mary Davis; the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Davis. She was ever a faithful and loving companion to her devoted husband during his lifetime, always attentive to the duties of her household and the rearing of her children.
Mrs. Theus was in the 84th year of her age, the date of her birth being January 15, 1849. She lived a wuiet and peaceful life even to the end death coming to her as a gentle sleep. The community feels her loss keenly for everyone who knew her loved her dearly. She was a true Christiam woman and faithful member of the Bethel Primitive Baptist church.
The following children survived her: Messrs. W.H, J.R., W.M., E.D., and A. W. Theus; Mrs. A.J. Taunton, Mrs. W.B. Taunton, Mrs. J.C. Rumph, Misses Georgia and Julia Theus.
Funeral services, followed by interment, were held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Bethel church and cemetery attended by a large gathering of loving and sympathizing friends. The services were conducted by Elder Haskell McCorkle. The pallbearers were: Messrs. C.B. and L.W. Theus, J.G., H.G., and W.H. Taunton and J.H. Cox.
