Generation No. 1

  1.  LAWSON2 RABY  (RABY1) was born 1832 in Lincoln or Burke Co., NC, and died 1866.  He married EVE STAMEY March 09, 1853 in Catawba Co., NC.  She was born Bet. 1830 - 1835 in Burke Co., NC, and died Bet. 1906 - 1908 in Marion or Baxter Co., AR.
Notes for LAWSON RABY:
Lawson served in the Confederacy in Yellville, Marion Co., under "one of the most hated leaders of that time" he died as a result from wounds suffered in the Civil War.
Children seperated as a result of the Civil War.
The 1880 Marion Co., AR, Buffalo Township censes that you found with William Raby, 18 living with John Freeman, is the last son of Lawson and Eve Stamy Raby.  He was Wm. A. Raby, born in 1862.  In the 1870 censes, Jonis and James are living with their mother, Eve.  But their sister, Martha Jane and their little brother, William A. are listed as living with a Woodcock.
We don't know what ever became of this William A. Raby, b. 1862 other than the 1880 censes states that he was living with John Freeman.
There are two William A. Raby's:  Son of Lawson and Eve Stamy Raby, b. 1862
Son of Jonis and Mary Ivens, b. 1882
This Lawson Raby is the father of Jones, James Dolphus, and Martha Jane Raby.  Census reports state that he was born in NC as were his father and mother.  He is listed in the census reports, Civil War records and personal possession tax records as Lawson Raby.  We have son's: James Dolphus, death certificate states that the fathers name was William Lawson Raby.
In an 1862 Searcy co., AR land tax records he is listed as a land owner to be taxed.  In an 1860 federal census of AR he is also listed as Lawson Raby, 28 years of age, born in NC.  All three of his children were born before this census of Searcy Co., AR was done.  His wife, Eave, was 30 yrs. old, born in NC.  His two sones, Jones and James, 6 and 4 were born in NC.  His daughter, Martha Jane was 2 years old in 1860 and was born in AR.
Civil War records state that Lawson Raby joined the Confederate Forces in Yellville, ARe on 28 June 1862; Captain Tate's Company, 1 Regiment, McBride's Brigade, AR Infantry: Company K, 27th.  AR Infantry.  He was a private.  The first company muster-in roll was in Camp Bragg, AR on 31 July 1862.  By 28 Feb 1863, the company muster roll states that he was absent without leave.
We have a Civil War widow's application for pension filed with the state of AR for Eve Raby, widow of Lawson Raby stating that Lawson was a member of Colonel Coffee's regiment, under Captain Young, regiment of the AR Calvary for the state of AR.  She stated that husband died "So I have heard in the spring of 1866".
There are proof of service statements from C.J. Petty, Ira Petty and T.H. Cox, stating that they had served with Lawson Raby in Colonel Coffee's regiment in the AR Calvary fro 1 June 1864 until 1 Feb 1865.  On the AR Confederate Veterans and Widows Pension Applications list there are two Raby's listed under the same veterans number #24511, John W. Raby and Lawson Raby.  There is no widow listed for John W., only for Lawson, the widow being Eve.  John W. Raby was from Lincoln Co., AR
Lawson never returned home after the Civil War was over.  Supposedly noone ever saw him again.  There are stories that he "ran off" with a nurse that was nursing him after being wounded during the war.  There are people that state that he was killed comming home after Feb 1865.  But his wife stated that she never saw him again.  Eve Raby received the pension applied for on 15 July 1905 and received it up through 1908 when she supposedly died.
There are also stories that say Lawson Raby came home and lived under an assumed name, that he really was absent without leave in 1863.  Some say his is buried beside his wife on their place in Marion Co., AR They say that he lived by the name of Rudy Raby up until his death in the early part of this century.  Please note that in Izard Co., there is listed on an 1880 Census a William Raby, 47 years of age, occupation being druggist.  He was born is SC with his parents being born in NC.  We do not know who this man is as of 1995.
There is also a William L. Raby listed on an 1850 VA Census living by himself being 28 years of age and a farmer.  We do not know who this is either.
In the 1870 Census for Searcy Co., Buffalo Twp, there is a Willaim A. Raby, age 7 years old, born in AR living in a household with Martha Jane Raby, age 9 years old, daughter of Lawson and Eve Raby.  There is also a 17 year old woman, Martha Isham from Missouri living in the house with the children.
Marion Co., 1880 Census, Buffalo Twp., also list the family of Daniel Raby, 47 years old, from TN, his parents being from KY and TN.  He is a farmer.  His wife, Susan is 23 and from AR, her parents are from TN.  His daughter, Anna, 7 years old, AR, his son, Sirus, 5 years old of AR.  Another daughter, Allis, age 1 year, AR.  But these children's parents are listed as being born in TN.  There is also a woman living with them, Mary Laffoon, 51 years, occupation, midwife from TN.
In the 1840 Census for NC in N. Catawba Twp, Burke Co., there is a Lydia Raby listed with five children, all males.  One is 8 years old, two children are between the ages of 5 and 10, and two children are under the age of 5.  There is also an older female living in the house between the ages of 60 and70.  Lydia is between 20 and 30.  The eight year child fits the year of being born as our Lawson Raby, 1832 or 1833.  There is a possibility that this Lydia Raby is Lydia Buttery who married George H. Raby in NC.  There was a son born to George and Lydiea, John Wesley, who married Katheyne Seren Link.  All of there children were born in Catawba Co., NC.  Rev. Joh Wesley Raby's daughter, Cora Ellen married W.T. Padgett in Runnels Co., TX

Notes for EVE STAMEY:
There are several spellings on Eave Stamy Raby, Eve, Evie.  We are unsure of the correct spelling.  Eave Stamy and Lawson Raby married in NC in Newton, Catawba Co., in 1853.  This information came from the Mormon Church records in Utah.  The information in the LDS computers in Utah was not entered until June 1987.  Eave's maiden name is even in question.  On James Dolphus Raby's death certificate, it is stated that his mother's maiden name was Guston.
Eave Raby is listed on the Searcy Co., AR 1860 Fed Census as being the wife of Lawson and being 30 years old, born in NC as were her parents.
In the 1870 Searcy Co., Census, Big Flat, AR, she is listed along with her sons, Jones M.D. and James D.  Her husband is not present.  Neither is her daughter Martha Jane.  In the 1880 Marion Co., AR, Buffalo Twp, Eave is living with her oldes son, Jones and his wife, Mry.  Eave is 51 years old and is listed as being a midwife.
Eave filed for Civil War Veterans widown pension in 1905.  She received $50.00 a month.  The las check that was sent to her was for $67.00.  The check was also marked, cancelled: this party dead.  This check was dated in 1908.
When and where Eave Raby died is unclear.  The man who went by the name of Rudy who live with Eave Raby until his death is a mystery.  Was this man Lawson?  Eave Raby and Rudy, who was called "Grandpa", by Eaves grandchildren are in living memories.  Soem say they lived until their daths on Rush Creek in AR and are buried on their old home place.  Who they were and what became of them after their deaths remains a mystery.

Jones Raby is reported as being buried 15 miles nor of Tulsa Ok in Skiatook, but his death certificate states that he was buried 7 Apr 1943 in Memorial Park in Tulsa, OK.
Jones M.D. Rraby use several different variations of his name through his life; Jones, M.D., Monroe D., and Monroe Dolphus.  We are not for sure if Dolphus was really part of his legal name.
Jones Raby and his wife, Mary Ivens, who by the way was Martin M. Ivens, Jr's sister, are listed on the 1880 federal census for Marion Co., AR in Buffalo Twp.  Also living in the same dwelling are Eae Raby, age 51 as being a midwife.  Joh Freeman, age 28, no occupation, is living in this dwelling also.  In 1880 Jones Raby is 26 years old and is a farmer.  Mary Ivens, 22 years of age, occupation being housewife.  Eave Raby's parent's names unknown at this time, are listed as being born in NC.

Jones Raby is listed in The History of Baxter County, as being the husband of Mary Ivesn, daughter of Martin M. Ivens, Sr.  Mary Ivens Raby died in 1882 with the birth of their first child, William Andrew.  In 1884 Jones married Elizabeth Beard3n.

On April 10, 1899 in Marion Co., M.D Raby sold land to Baker and Mabrey.  Mabrey and Baker are listed as residents in Big Flat, AR up through the turn of this century.
M.D. Raby sold land to C.A. Krone, 2 Sept 1899.
In 1900 Jones is listed on the ceensus of Searcy Co., Beaver Twp along with his wife, Elizabeth and six of their children.  There is also a son of Elizabeth's, Columbus, from her earlier marriage.  Jones is listed as being 46 years old, being  born in NC.  Marshall Lack, age 24, born in AR, is also living in the house.  He is listed as being a "brother"  Is this a brother to Elizabeth?  He is not a brother to Jones.
On 14 Mar 1900, in Searcy Co., M.D Raby mortgaged to Baker and Mabrey for $65.00on bay horse 5 yrs old, one brown horse 5 yrs old, one red cow 5 yrs old and her red heifer calf 10 months old, one white cow with red speckled neck 3 yrs old and her roan bullo calf 2 months old, and all the corn and cotton raise or caused to be raised by the pary of the first part for the year 1900.  This note would be due 15 Nov 1900.
Jones Raby, was reportedly an irresponsible father where his first son, William Andrew was concerned.  The stories say that he would leave William A. "anywhere" But later in jones life, William A was the child who gave back to him a little of his dinity.

3.  JAMES DOLPHUS3 RABY (LAWSON2, RABY1) was born December 06, 1856 in NC, and died November 29, 1941 in Glendale, Trinity Co., TX.  He married   MINERVA JANE GEORGE Bet. 1869 - 1871 in AR, daughter of ANDREW GEORGE and MARY BOLINGER.  She was born October 20, 1851 in Hiawassee, Georgia Towns Co., AR, and died 1926 in Batesville, Independance Co., AR.

Notes for JAMES DOLPHUS RABY:
James Dolphus Raby, second son of Lawson and Eave Raby, is listed on the 1860 census of Searcy Co., AR along with his parents, brother and sister.  James is listed as 4 years old, born in NC.  James is also listed on the 1870 census of Searcy Co in the Big Flat Twp.  he is 12-14 years old at the time.
James Dolhus married Minerva Jane George in 1871.  But we have not found a marriag certificate proving this date.  Some say that they marrie in AR and others say they were married in MO.
In the 1880 census of Marion Co., Buffalo Twp, James Raby is listed as being 25 and a farmer.  Minerva is 28.  Four of their children were born by 1880 with the youngest child, being one year old.  James is listed as being born in NC with his parents coming from NC and AR.  Minerva is listed as being born in AR with her parents coming from TN and IL.
James Dolphus Raby appears to have owned a fairly large amount of land in Marion Co., and after the turn of this century, land in Baxter Co.  The earliest tax records of Marion Co., are 1887.  The courhouse had burned previously and records were lost.  Tax records indicate that the land owned by James was located in Twp 17, Range 14, in Section 35,36, 25, 26 between the years of 1887 and 1905 if not longer.
There is a Warranty Deed, dated 17 July 1903, Baxter Co., that states James D. Raby purchased from John and Martha J. Rose, for the sum of six-hundred dollars, 200 acres with the following description; the south east quater section (30) thirty, the south east quarter of the south west quarter, section (30), Twp 16 north of range 13 west, containg (200) two hundred acres more or less.
In 1905, Baxter Co., Warranty Deed, states that James D. Raby sold to the United States land.  The instrument was a Patient Land Deed.
J.D. Raby sold land to J.D. Woverton in Marion Co., North east quarter of section 36, twp 17, north range 14 west.  This land was also sold for the sum of one dollar and other consideration.  This was a Quitclaim Deed.
On 12 Nov 1909, James D. Raby, for the sum of one hundred dollars, sold land in section 30, twp 16, north of range 13 west, Baxter Co.,  The land was purchased by T.G. Sisk, F.P. Treat and W.H. Huffines.
On 29 Oct 1910, in the County of Baxter, J.D. Raby purchased land from Thomas and Julia Rose for the sum of one hundred dollars.  The description of the land is as follows: beginning at the ne corner of ne quarter, sw quarter, section 30, twp 16, north of range 13 thence south to corner stone, 26 rods for beginning point, thence south 54 rods, thence west 80 rods, thence north 54 rods, thence east 80 rods to place of beginning all in the ne quarter sw quarter, section 30, twp 16, north of range 13 west containign 27 acres more or less.
In Baxter County, Sept 16,1911, J.D Raby and his wife Minerva J. Raby, sold a large amount of land to G.R. Treat for the sum of One Thousand dollars.
The taxes extended agains person property in the Big Flat tqp, 1911 lists JD Raby as a taxpayer.  His horses were heavely taxed, being twice the worth of other horses listed on the same personal tax record.  It would appear that James owned land in Baxter, Marion and Searcy Counties.
There are stories of a salt peter cave located close to Jame's house in Marion Co.  The Confederate forces used it during the Civil War.  The Military road, that was used before and during the Civil War, was approximately a mile north of their house with the cave being south of them.  There are stories to the effect of the cave being used as ahide out by the James Gang.  But this has never been proved nor disproved.
There are also stories of Miverva Jane's father having a silver mine close to James and Minerva's place.  Note that Andrew J. George is listed at the age of 69 as being a miner.
One of James and Minerva's daughter's, Anna, married a man by the name of Huffman, died with the birth of her first child and is supposed to be buried on her father's old home place in Marion Co., The child of Anna's, a daughter, was called Janie.  We believe her name to have been Martha Jane.  Jane live with James and Minerva until her marriage.  People say that there are four graves on the place with some claiming they know where they are, supposedly y a spring used for water.  Our people have checked this place, even though it is now part of the Buffalo National Forrest, and not much was found.  A pile of rocks that could have been a chimney, the spring used for water but no marked graves were found.  Noone has lived there for 90+ years.  Their youngest son Martin G. "Bit", is also supposed to be buried there along with Eave and Lawson Raby.
After James and Minerva sold out in Marion Co., they moved down close to Conway, AR. where one of their sons, Sherman, owned a farm.  Janie was married there to a "man we didn't know and moved up North."  Miverva died there.  After her death James Dolphus moved to Watson, Desha Co., AR to live near his daughter, Rachael Isom and her family.  In the fall of 1932, James Dolphus came to live in TX, Live Oak co., Simmons City, with his oldest son, William Lawson.  About 1940 he move to Glendale, Texas in Trinity Co., to live out the rest of his life with his daughte, Mary Raby Kirby, and her family.  James Dolphus and Minerva are in living memories.
The exact dated of James and Minerva's marriage is unknown.  Stories say they married when James Dolphus was 14 or so.  his son William Lawson was fond of saying he could remember when his father was 21 years old.  If this is true then james Dolphus did marry at a very young age.
James Dolphus Raby died, Nove 15, 1941 in Glendale.  He is buried next to his daughter, Mary, in the Glendale Cemetary.  his headstone simply reads, James Dolphus Raby, 1854-1941.

Notes for MINERVA JANE GEORGE:
A cousin was looking up in a library in Arkansas and found out that, Minerva Jane George, was 1/4 Irish-German- 3/4 Cherokee. Recorded in Bureau of Indian Affairs, Washington D.C. This means her father Andrew Jackson George and his wife, Mary "Jeanette/Jennett" Bollinger/Bolinger/Bolen, both of them had to be at least part Cherokee.
Minerva Jane George is isted on an 1880, Marion Co., AR census living with her husband, James Raby.  Minerva is 28 years old at the time.  There are also four of their children living with them, Martha Jane "Matt", William, Rachael, and Sada.   Minerva is listed as being boorn in AR with her parents being born in TN and IL.  All of Minerva and James Raby's children were born in AR, in Marion Co., there is a Warranty Deed, dated 18 Aug 1899, that states Minerva Jane George Raby, being a child of Andrew J. George, sells her one-nineth interest as a child and heir at law of Andre J. George, deceased.  She is selling her share of her father's estate to C.A Krone ofr the sum of $110.00.
Here is a letter that Minerva Jane sent to her daughter, Mary Raby before her marriage to John Kirby, in Kleburg Dallas Co., TX.  It is written here the way she wrote it:
Big Flat, Ark.
Sept 1899
Mary Raby
Kleburg, Tex.
Dear Daughter,
We are all well except your pa he has got the tooth-ache and the neuralgia (?) and the rest are all well.  I don't ever expect to get to see you.  you will have to come out here if I ever get to see you.  Write and let me know whether you are willing to come or not and if you do I will send you money for you to come home on.  You must see how much money it will take to bring you to Batesville.  And your pa and I will meet you at Batesville if you want to come home.  I haven't got much to write.  I will write more next time.
    Your Mother,
    M.J. Raby
The letter is post marked Big Flat, AR, Sept 5 1899.
Minerva Jane George reportedly died between 1920 and 1926 at Paw Paw Bend in AR.  As of yet we have found no death certificate on her.
Her place of burial is unclear to us as of 1995.
She is in the living memories of some of her grandchildren and their stories vary concerning her personality and attitude toward people in general.

      4.  MARTHA JANE3 RABY (LAWSON2, RABY1) was born in Searcy Co., AR.  She married (1) THOMAS PETTY.    She married (2) MARTIN M. IVENS.

Notes for MARTHA JANE RABY:
Martha Jane Raby Petty Ivens died from "a fever".  She and her second husband, Martin M. Ivens, Jr. lived on Hall's Mountain.  She is buried in Halls Cememtary on Hall's Mountain, Marion Co., AR.  Her grave is unmarked.  What happened to her first husband, Thomas Joshua Petty?   he either died, disappeared or was killed in 1881.
Martha is the daughter of Lawson and Eave Raby and a sister to James Dolphus and Jones Raby.
Martha's oldest son, William Petty, carved her initials in a tree on Hall's Mountain at their home places.  As of a few years ago, her intials were still visible.  It is said of her that she would take three water jgs to the spring for water, fill all three of them and carry them back to the house, one in each hand and one on top of her head.  It is also said of her that she had hair so long that while sitting in a chair with her hair down, it would touch the floor.  Martha Jane is in living memory.
On the 1860 census, Martha is listed along with the rest of her family.  And she was living in the same house with her mother, father and two brothers.  Then in 1870, Searcy Co., Buffalo Twp, she is listed as being 9 years old at the time, living with William A. Raby, 7 years old, born in AR and Martha Isham, 17 years old and being from Missouri.  What was Martha Jane doing living in a different dwelling from her mother and brothers?  Her father, Lawson was already gone by 1870.  The 7 year old Wiiliam A. Raby is not the son of Jones Raby.  Jones sone, William Andrew, was not born until 1882.  Whose child was this Wiiliam A. Raby?
Martha Jane's first marriage to Thomas Petty does not sound like it was very happy.  Thomas seemed to like the ladies too much.  After he disappeared, she waited seven years before remarrying.  Mart Ivens, Jr., was 17 years old about the time of their marriage.
Notes from Norma Casey

Notes for THOMAS PETTY:
Thomas Joshua Petty and Martha Jane Raby Petty are listed on an 1880 federal census for Marion Co., AR in the Buffalo Twp.  Thomas Petty was 23 years old at the time.  He is listed as a farmer.  Both of his parents, names unknown at this time, are listed as being born in AR.  Marth Jane's parents are both listed as being born in NC.

Notes for MARTIN M. IVENS:
The family name of Ivens has always been so.  But around the turn of the twentith century, with the birth of Martin Ivens, Jr.  and Bell Lovell's children, they chose to carry the family as Evans.  The reason for this is unclear at this time.  The descendants of Martin Ivens, Sr that still reside in AR carry the family name as Ivens and also Evans.  The descendants of Martin Ivens, in CA go by the family name of Evans.
On the same day that Martin Ivens, Jr married his second wife, Bell Lovell, his daughter, Mary E. Ivens, from his first wife Martha Jane Raby Petty, married Bell Lovell's brother J.D. Lovell.  Both Bell Lovell and Mary Ivens were sixteen years old at the time.  These two marriages are listed in the Marion Co., Courthouse in Yellville AR.

The funeral record of Dolphus listed him as a widower.  Cora was not dead at the time of his death.  Dolphus died at the lumber company that he was employed at in Seminole, OK.  His step-daughter, Dolly Riley Cantrell, paid for hi funeral.

Notes for SARAH MYLINDA ELIZABETH RABY:
Sada Lynn Raby Lawrence moved to Fresno CA in the 1930's.
There is some question as to Sada's first name.  People knew her as Sada.  But her marriage certificate states that her name was Sarah M.  Raby.  At the time of her marriage she was 14 and a resident of Big Flat Twp.  he was 24 and also a resident of Big Flat Twp in Baxter Co.  HJ Copeland, Minister performed the ceremony.  There is a question about the year she was born.
On the 1880 Marion Co., Buffalo Twp census, Sada is listed with her parents, James and Minerva Raby as being 1 year old.  She being born in AR with her parents being fromNC and AR.  If she was born in 1879 then she would be 10 years old at the time of her marriage.  This didn't happen.  The marriage certificate says 14, this would have her being born in 1875.

Sada died in CA.  She was buried there but her place of burial in unknown.

PADGETT November 16, 1895 in Grand Saline, Van Zandt Co., TX, daughter of CHELSEY PADGETT and MARY TUCKER.  She was born March 05, 1873 in Grand Saline, Van Zandt Co., TX, and died June 01, 1959 in Yorktown, Dewitt Co., TX.

Notes for WILLIAM LAWSON RABY:
William Lawson Raby, son of James Dolphus and Minerva Jane George Raby, is listed on the 1880 census for Marion Co., AR, Buffalo Twp, living in the house with James Dolphus, Minerva, Martha Jane, Rachael and Sada.  William is 5 years at the time, born in AR with his parents being from NC and AR.
William Lawson supposedly left AR in or before 1895.  Stories say that he left "on the run" either because of "killings" or because of something that involved a woman.  There are stories of a killing he was involved in that took place on Push Mountain.  No one seems to know for sure the reason for his departure.
On Nove 16, 1895, William Lawson was in Van Zandt Co., TX where he married Anice A. Padgett.  They were married by a Justice of the Peace.  The marriage license states that J. Will Lawson and Miss Anice Padgett were married.
There are so many stories about William Lawson.  All of the stories involve different peoples perception of him.  Some say that he was a very stern man, very abrupt, and never laughed. Others say that he did what he had to when the time came.
William Lawson Raby paid taxes on land in Marion Co., AR beginning in 1893 in Section 35, 25 and 36 in twp 17, range 14 and ending in 1904.  The tax records are in the Marion Co., Courthouse in Yellville, AR.
In 1896 William Lawson moved his family to the Hutchins-Lancaster area, to a farm near the Trinity River, on the south side of Dallas Co., after 1901, they moved to another farm, near the Trinity River, in Shepherd, San Jacinto Co.
They left Shepherd about 1905 in a covered wagon and went to Pauls Valley, OK near the Washita River and farmed.  William Lawson and his family remained in OK a year or so and started back to TX.  They came back to TX on a boat that started out as being a flat boat.  Before they reached Morgan City, LA by way of the Washita, Red, and Atchafalaya Rivers, the flat boat was a houseboat.  At Morgan City, they sold their houseboat, loaded all of their belongings onto a train and left for Liberty, TX.  From Liberty, they traveled to Anahuac and on to Morgans Point.  Back to Anahuac after 1910 and on to Galveston.  From Galveston they moved to Orange, TX where they lived for the next 6 years, hunting, fishing, trapping and farming.  He also raised sunken logs for a sawmill and worked in a ship building yard.
In all of William Lawson's wanderings, he and his family sometimes lived in houses or they lived on the river in boats mostly in the Sabine and Trinity Rivers.
In 1915 they rode out the Hurricane near Sabine Pass.  In late November of 1918 they moved yet again, this time by covered wagon and traveled to Beaumont, Baytown, Morgans Point, Alvin, Angelton to Sweeney near the San Bernard River in Brazoria Co.
In the fall of 1920, they again moved by covered wagon west, by way of Bay City, Edna,, Victoria, Goliad, Beeville, Oakville and Three Rivers to Simmons.  William Lawson built a barn-residence five miles from Simmons.  The family lived there until a house was completed.
In 1928 William Lawson reportedly had a water well drilled.  He continued to farm, purchasing and selling land until the middle or late 1940's.  William and Anice moved to Port O'Connor to live with their children and their families and stayed there for several years before entering a nursing home in Yorktown, TX.
In his later years he was a resident of Didear Rest Home in Yourktown, DeWitt Co., TX.  He died there at the age of 79 on 6 July 1954, after his ulcer caused intesional hemorrhaging.  Death occured 12 hours after the onset of the hemorrhage.
William Lawson Raby is buried in Seadrift, TX, Calhoun Co. in the Seadrift Cemetary 9 July 1954.  His wife is buried next to him.
We will never know if all the stories about William Lawson are true or not.  He is still in living memory as of 1995.  He is remembered by his two living sons who have almost entirely different opinions concerning their father.  he is also remembered by his remaining grandchildren.

Notes for ANICE A. PADGETT:
Anice Padgett married William Lawson in Van Zandt Co., in 1895.  Know that the marriage license states that J. Will Lawson married her.  Was she aware at the time of her marriage that his name was not J. Will Lawson? One has to wonder
Anice was reportedly a well educated woman.  She seemed to be educated in the area of music according to her sons memories of her.
In Aug of 1914, she wrote two letters to her sister-in-law Mary Raby Kirby, who resided in Glendale, TX.  I typed them here the way that Anice wrote them.

Anice Padgett Raby moved with her husband, William Lawson, almost more times that can be counted.  She moved with him for almost 50 years.  There are pictures of her at a young age that attest to the fact that she was a pretty woman.
After the Hurrican of 1915, Anice was hospiitalized for typhoid fever along with her younges son Joe Bailey.  She died in a nursing home in 1959, five years after William Lawson's death and was buried June 3, 1959 in the Seadrift Cememtary, Seadrift, TX, next to her husband.

  24.  HARVEY CECIL5 RABY (WILLIAM LAWSON4, JAMES DOLPHUS3, LAWSON2, RABY1) was born April 05, 1905 in Shepherd, San Jacinto Co., TX.  He married MARY ALICE JOHNSON June 12, 1924 in George West, Live Oak Co., TX, daughter of ISAAC JOHNSON and MINTA BROOKS.  She was born February 23, 1906 in Finley Twp., Pushamataha Co., OK, and died November 1979 in Port Lavaca, Calhoun Co., TX.

Notes for HARVEY CECIL RABY:
Buck aquired his nickname at the age of 16 months.  His mother began calling him Buck because he liked to play with the Sears and Robuck catalog.  He still goes by Buck.
Buck traveled and lived with his parents in OK, AR, LA and TX.  He has hunted, trapped, farmed and fished all his life.
He taught himself to play the fiddle at the age of 17.  He said that his father, William Lawson, told him that he would never learn to play.  As of 1995, Buck has been playing a fiddle for 73 years.  The first fiddle that he ever bought cost him $7.00, case and all.
Buck moved with his parents for Port O'Connor to Simmons City in the 1920's .  He met and married his wife, Mary Alice Johnson there.  They moved back and forth between  Simmons and Port O'Connor for a number of years fishing and farming.  At some point after 1935, he sold out everything in Port O'Connor, bought land in AR and moved his family to AR.  They moved back to Port O'Connor until after 1962.  At that time he moved his family to Seadrift, TX.  He lives there still as of 1997.
In the 1920's and 1930's, the men in Seadrift and Port O'Connor boxed as one of their pastimes.  Buck participated in this.  he has told his grandchildren stories about men who did this.  Pete Katy spared for Jack Dempsey in CA.  Pete Katy was from Seadrift.  Buck thought that at one time he might want to go into boxing for money.  "Many's the time I boxed Pete.  The gloves we used were so scuffed up that you could mark a man with them."  But because of the loss of one eye at the age of four he was unable to do so.  You had to get a license, you see, to box.  To get a license you had to have the sight of both your eyes."  "Everytime someone goes to you, they leave theirselves open so's you can hit them, you see."
Notes from Norma Casey

Notes for MARY ALICE JOHNSON:
Alice traveled with her family to various places in TX and OK.  When her parents seperated in 1918 she went with her father as did the other three youngest children whele the three oldest children stayed with their mother.
She is remembered as having very long hair.  Alice contacted smallpox shortly after her marriage to Harvey "Buck" Raby.  While she was sick, Buck took care of her.  Her fever was so high that her hair began to fall out.  Buck has said that he can remember, while changing the sheets on the bed, he would remove handfuls of Alice's hair along with the sheets.  She obviously survived the smallpox but her hair never grew back the way that was before.  Alice is remembered as saying that she could remember when she and her family first came to TX.  They came in a covered wagon.  Isaac Newton would allow one cup of water a day during the time that they were traveling through a dry area.  Alice had a crippled foot.  And there are several stories as to the reason why.  One story states that as a child, she was running and playing in the house and her foot became injured in the threshold.  Still another states that a loaded wagon ran over her foot.  Alice loved to crochet, embroidery, quilt, sew and can anything.  I'd like to thing that she taught her children and grandchildren something that is useful to them today.
