From book, FAMILIES NOT FORGOTTEN, by Frances Ruth Hackworth:

Christophel PROBST was born 31 March 1661 in Kandel in the Palatinate in
Germany, this being the location of the religious upheaval precipitating
the exodus from this area to the new land of America. Christophel was
married to Eve Christine HOFFMAN and ten children were born to them
between
the late 1680's and about 1714. Christophel's will shows the family
residing
in Oberseebach, wherein he lists the children's names, including Philip
Jacob PROBST, my 7th great grandfather.

John Michael was a traveling potter, Johannes was a potter in Kandel in
1727.
He came to America in 1733. Philip Jacob was a potter of Oberseebach, he
came
to America in 1732.

France controlled Alsace in 1720, therefore Philip & sons were French
citizens.
Philip arrived in America 17 Oct 1732 on "John & William". Also Catrina
(Cerene), Michael & "Feldy" (Valentine) "PROOPS". Ship was last from
Dover.
Landed in Philadelphia Co., PA...became Berks County. Philip bought 150
acres
1 Aug 1734 & 100 acres 25 Mar 1742, Albany Twp., Berks, PA. Family bible
shows
Philip BROBST came from Germany, Dominion of Lower Lapson and settled in
Albany
Twp. in 1734.

Philip Jacob PROBST worked in the town of Oberseebach of Alsace. Records
show
he was born about 1690-1695 in Wurttemberg, Germany, and another record
states
Dominion of Lower Lapson. France controlled Alsace in 1720 so Philip and
his
family were French citizens. The town in Alsace where Philip and Cerene's
children were born is Oberseebach...the records state:"Philippe Jacques
Probst
and Catharine, his wife, Lutherans, had these children found in the Parish
registers of Oberseebach: 28 August 1721 Jean Michel; 18 Feb 1724 Jean
Valentin; 29 December 1726 Jean Martin; 8 March 1731 Anne Marie."

Philip qualified in Philadelphia 17 October 1732.

From 1732 until 1734 the life of Philip and Cerene and their children in
the new land is not mentioned, to my (Frances Ruth Hackworth) knowledge.
He may have followed the occupation of potter, as he had been in Alsace,
however, it is known he purchased land (150 acres) 1 August 1734;
(50acres)
in 1742, and (100 acres) 25 March 1742 in what is now Albany Township,
Berks,
Pennsylvania, for farming. In 1747, Philip drew up his will which was
probated
March 21, 1760 and made good provision for his children: Michael, one
hundred
acres of land and a good grist mill belonging thereto; Martin a tract of
50
acres and a good new grist mill; Valentine, his just portion of the
estate; Eve
Catherine, 50 pounds in money, and Dorothy 50 pounds in money, Anna Maria
is
not mentioned.

After the arrival in America, Philip's surname of Probst began to be
written
and recorded as Brobst, and other variations.

Bill Brobst states in his book, p.27, "Johannes F., like most of the
Brobst, was a farmer, but he also operated a grist mill with his brother,
Michael. He established his family farm in Lynn Township, Northampton
County, just over the county line from Berks county, and only a few miles
from the Jerusalem (Red) Church in Stony Run, albany Township. His
children were born on the family farm in Northampton County, but were
baptized in Berks County, thereby confusing the county of birthplace with
the place of baptism."
"Johannes F. did not serve in the Revolutionary War. He was a life-long
farmer and remained on the family farm until he died in 1792 at the young
age of 42."
