  3. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
  4. National University of Singapore Muslim Society (NUSMS) was established as a registered society on 22 August 1964.Before that, it had a long history with University of Malaya Muslim society, involving itself in various anti-colonial activities and in initiatives towards the discussion of pertinent societal issues. Some of the issues discussed were like the Muslim Inheritance Bill, the need for a central Malayan Administration Authority, status of woman in Islam, Womens Charter, the backwardness of the Malays and education of the Muslims.

In 1964, after the separation with University of Malaya and subsequently the independence of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965, a major reshuffle in policy-making was made as the reins of the NUSMS as an organization had always been held by the Malaysians. It was decided then, that efforts should be focus onto the minority Muslim community in Singapore in alleviating their socio-economic realities; which have serious long-term implications. One such community project that NUSMS had done were the Muslim Parents Awareness Campaign jointly planned with the Islamic Religious Council in 1974 to 1975.

The turning point of the society was in 1975 when its structure and activities took a new perspective as a result of a heightened Islamic awareness and Ummatic consciousness in campus, aiming at the development of Islamic workers and thinkers. Close links and learning networks with international Islamic organizations were forged such as Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam Indonesia (HMI) and Persatuan Mahasiswa Islam Asia Tenggara(PERMIAT). A new NUSMS mission statement which embodies qualities that a Muslim leader should have was put into place - as what the society have it right now.

Since then till the 90s, the leaderships of NUSMS have made unrelenting efforts in continuing the work of establishing the vision and mission of NUSMS - through the development of the total Syaksiyyah(personality) of undergraduates of which they are able to be effective agents of good change in society, Insya-Allah.

  5. VISION, MISSION, OBJECTIVES AND MOTTO
  6. Vision

    Towards a God-conscious society

    Mission

The development of an academic, innovator and devoted Muslim individual, responsible for the establishment of a just and prosperous society blessed by Allah s.w.t.

    Objectives

NUSMS is committed to achieving the following objectives:

    • To promote Islamic studies and culture
    • To prevent the improper interpretations of the teachings of Islam and that of which is a hindrance to the pursuit of knowledge
    • To be of service to our co-religionists in matters pertaining to religion and education
    • To promote better relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims

    Motto

Since it has always been the objective of any higher institution of learning to produce people who absorb knowledge critically, it would be a natural for undergraduates to develop a strong sense of attachment towards the pursuit of knowledge, for the sake of developing ourselves. Motivated further, by the importance accorded to the pursuit of knowledge by Islam and the fact that we are people of learning. As such NUSMS motto is as following:

    "Rabbi Zidni Ilman"

(My Lord, increase me in knowledge)

    (Surah Taha: 114)

  7. ORGANIZATIONAL PRINCIPLES
  8. These organizational principles are of cardinal importance that must be strictly observed and adhered to in efforts towards realizing our mission.

    • Comprehension
    • Obedience and Respect
    • Consultation
    • Collective Effort

  9. CORE VALUES
  10. In order to guide ourselves in our working relationship together, as well in the efforts of implementation of societys programmes, 4 core values are adopted to create an organizational culture that is cordial, amicable and directed.

    • Sincerity of Intention
    • Wisdom in Implementation
    • Strategic management
    • Tears of Hope

  11. LEADERSHIP DIRECTIVES
  12. Leadership directives expect and demand people in the leadership to be exemplary Muslim individuals, through good actions and clarity of mission.

    • Ensure unity and solidarity
    • Be wise in struggles
    • Strengthen and increase on ones own deeds

  13. ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS AND KEY TRENDS
  14. NUSMS accepts the fact that dawah without a deep understanding of social, political, economic and cultural realities will inevitably make it outdated and ineffective in its struggle towards establishing its mission. And as such NUSMS will continue to recognize the following trends in the NUSMS Plan 2000:

    • The Islam revivalism all over the world, particularly in this region and as such how can we ride on this wave of Islamic resurgence and renewal
    • The growing acknowledgment that oppression and subjugation are no longer physical and coercive in nature but through economic and intellectual domination - surgically maneuvered in implementation
    • The perception that with the death of socialism and communism, Islam is the apparent enemy of the new world order
    • The growth of da wah Islamiah as a sophisticated industry of its own, which requires heavy investments in all levels such as finance, human resource, mass media, information technology and professional expertise
    • The pervasiveness of corruption and vulgarities, spread by technology and its impact on society and da wah Islamiah
    • With the event of a regional economic crisis, societies are undergoing major political, social, economic and structural upheavals and as such how does dawah Islamiah consolidates its efforts with deep understanding of current social realities
    • The unique and inseparable history between countries in ASEAN and their close interdependence to one another, in particular between Singapore and Malaysia and how does such political sensibilities affects the nature of dawah in Singapore
    • As education and information become more and more readily accessible, NUSMS will face the challenges of an increasingly knowledge and service based society who will be assertive and demanding in their requests and wants
    • Growing expectation from the undergraduates to see quality programmes that are mass appealing and cultural in nature; and that are able to fulfill their overall development as an individual and as a small community in campus

In response to these challenges and trends, NUSMS must continue to give its utmost commitment to employing the necessary steps in ensuring that Islam is uphold and the work of enjoining righteousness and forbidding falsehood(amar maruf nahi mungkar) is continued with resoluteness.

Verily Allah is with those who are with the truth and remember Allah s.w.t says in surah Muhammad verse 7; " O you believe! If you help in the cause of Allah, He will help you, and make your foothold firm."
