bullet Thomas FIELDS was born in 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He moved between 1832 and 1835 to Gwinnett County, Georgia. The first 4 children of Thomas and Susanna Humphrey Fields up to Caroline (b. 1832) were listed in the 1850 census as born in North Carolina. The last six children, beginning with Catherine (b. 1835( were listed on the 1850 census as born in Georgia. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. The record for the family of Thomas Fields showed 1 male under 5, 2 males 10-15, 1 male 30 -40, 1 female under 5, 2 females 5-9, and 1 female 30-40. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Gwinnett County, Georgia. He moved between 1850 and 1860 to Pickens County, Georgia. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Pickens County, Georgia. Family # 964, residence # 820 shows Thomas Fields (60), Susan (54), William (17), Nancy (12), Evaline (10), John (8), and James (6). It is thought that John and James might have been visiting grandchildren or children born late in life to Thomas and Susanna. If they are children they did not survive until the next census. They have never been positively identified. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Pickens County, Georgia. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Pickens County, Georgia. He died in 1889 in Pickens County, Georgia. He was buried in 1889 in Long Swamp Baptist Church in Pickens County, Georgia. bullet Thomas FIELDS was born between 1859 and 1879. Parents: Thomas Jefferson FIELDS and Selena PENDLEY.

bullet Thomas FIELDS Esq. was born before 1755 in Albemarle County, Virginia. (5980) No birth record has been located for Thomas Fields at this time. Census records indicate that he was born prior to 1755. He was baptist between 1777 and 1807 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. He was active in the Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, holding the office of clerk and later that of deacon. Jesse Boone, a brother of Daniel Boone took over the clerk duties from Thomas. He appeared on the census in 1790 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. In 1790 Thomas Fields and one son are indicated that are over 16 years of age. This would indicate that Thomas' oldest son, William was born before 1774. There was also one son under 16, which would be Reuben and 5 females which would include wife Betty and four daughters. He was appointed to a committee in 1799 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. This committee was formed to purchase public lands. On this land the Wilkes County courthouse, Wilkesboro, North Carolina was built. He appeared on the census in 1800 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. The 1800 census indicates 2 free white males between 16 and 25 (only Reuben was known to be in this age group) years old and 1 free white male 25 to 44 years old. This would indicate that Thomas was born after 1756. It also showed 1 free white female 16 to 25 years of age., 1 free white female 26 to 44 years of age and one free white female over 45 years of age. If we assume that Betty was the free white female over 45 years of age she would have been born prior to 1755. This would leave Polly and Winne (one over 25 and one 25 or under) still at home. He signed a will on 10 Jan 1807 in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Thomas left a will dated 10 January 1807 and probated February term 1807 which named his wife Betty and children, William Fields, Jane Compton, Reuben Fields, Betsy Pendley, Winnifred Humphrey, Polly Humphrey, and Sally Pendley. Executors were wife Betty Fields, sons William Fields and Reuben Fields and trusty friend Eli Coffey. Witnesses were William Lenoir, Lewis Coffey, and Jonathan Boone.

The trusty friend Eli Coffey was Betty's nephew. Witness Lewis Coffey was also a relative of Betty. Jonathan Boone was a brother of Daniel Boone. He and another brother, Jesse Boone were members of the Yadkin Grove Baptist Church, as were several members of the Fields and Coffey families. Daniel Boone himself had lived in Wilkes County, North Carolina but had already moved away, moving first into Kentucky and later to Missouri.

He died after 10 Jan 1807 in Wilkes County, North Carolina. (5981) Parents: Richard FIELDS and Elizabeth MURRELL.

He was married to Elizabeth COFFEY before 1773 in Albemarle County, Virginia. (4312) When John Coffey's estate was appraised some nineteen years after his death, Elizabeth and her "lawful husband Thom. Fields" were named in the report of the appraisers. Betty Fields was named in John Coffey's will as being one of his children. When Elizabeth's nephew, Eli Coffey, applied for a pension as a veteran of the American Revolution, Thomas Fields was named as his uncle by marriage. Children were: Jane FIELDS , William FIELDS, Reuben FIELDS Sr, Elizabeth FIELDS, Winfred FIELDS, Mary FIELDS, Sarah FIELDS.

bulletThomas W. FIELDS was born between 1845 and 1885. I would like to relate to you a story from The Atlanta Newspaper from around 1889. As told to the Federal agents by John Coffey. John was granted immunity in exchange for his testimony. After the trial John left Georgia. It was said, he moved to Texas. Well back to the story. In the 1800 the reward system inspired a group of men to band together for protection and retaliation. The group numbering about twenty formed a secret society called The Honest Man's Friend and Protector. Later to be called The Pickens County Nightriders. They vowed to fight the revenuers and to wipe out the spy system by dealing out harsh justice to suspected informers. The vigilantes were primarily from the Sharptop Militia District in Pickens County and they swore to protect each other and to keep their business a closely guarded secret. Death was promised to any member who broke the vow of secrecy. For two years houses went up in smoke, suspected informers were whipped and sometime shot and entire families fled in terror as their houses were torched by a band of men in bizarre disguises of hoods, cloaks, masks and blacked faces. It was against this backdrop of raiders and defender, spy and counterspy, that The Honest Man's Friend and Protector over step their bounds of the law once to often. It all began on the morning of December 3, 1889. It was found out that a trusted ally W. N. ("Nels") Ledford not only had he become an informer but had actually led federal agents to moon shine stills. Two letters had been sent to warn Ledford, but he had ignored them. Now it was discovered he was on his way to Atlanta to testify. Old Jack Landsdown and his sons Seaborn and Little Jack stuck out from their homes in a remote valley of Pickens County near the Gilmer County line. They went in separate direction but their mission was a common one, to round up as many members of The Honest Man's friend and Protector as they could find. The Landsdowns need help in spreading the word and finding and enlisting as many members. They decided to first secure the aid of Thomas and Eli Fields. Since the Landsdowns lived a little over a mile from the crossroads church, they scheduled a meeting in the churchyard later that night. Eli and Thomas Fields, Harrison Jones, Thomas Pendley, Tom Rowland, George Coffey, Alexander Richard's, Marcus Holbert, Arch Grizzle, John Forester and Mark Holbert. Mark Holbert was sick and excused from the raid. So the beginning of the end of our story unfolds. The H.M.F.&P. Burned the home of Nels Ledford, in so doing sealed the fate of their lives. Mary Ledford the wife of Nels Ledford recognized Old Jack Landsdown. Jack Landsdown, Seaborn Landsdown, Harrison Jones and George Coffey escaped from jail. Two months later they were found in North Carolina, fought it out and Old Jack Landsdown was killed. Some of the men never made it to court for lack of evidence. John Coffey related to George Coffey turned State witness. In exchange for immunity for himself and George Coffey testified against. Harrison Jones, Thomas Pendley, Thomas Fields, Eli Fields, Eli Coffey, Little Jack Landsdown, and Seaborn Landsdown. The Landsdown's attempted another escape both were killed. Thomas Pendley, Harrison Jones and the remaining men all drew life in Prison. Harrison Jones wrote a Poem," Many Men of Many Minds, Many Birds of Many kinds. This Poem is inscribed on his grave stone. Harrison Jones died after getting pneumonia and being made to go back into the coal mines to soon. He died in prison in 1890 he was 31 years old. Thomas Fields too died of pneumonia under the same circumstances. Thomas Pendley was released, as was Eli Coffey. Coleman Jones, the Grandson of Harrison Jones, told me, "He remembered Thomas Pendley walking with baby steps after his release and continued to walk that way until his death. This Thomas Pendley was an uncle. Thomas was the Grandfather of Denny Darnel, a very successful Doctor in Tate Georgia. Many of the Pendley's and family's related, became Doctors, Ministers, Judges, and School Teachers Many of whom still practice their chosen trades. Parents: Reuben Cuthbert FIELDS and Elizabeth F. He served in the Rainbow Division in the United States Army during World War I. He and his Sargeant captured 3 Germans. The Sargeant wanted to just shoot the Germans but Wilford talked him out of it and they were taken back alive. The marriage between Wilford Fields and Gladys Thomas had a shaky beginning. The Fields and the Hill families owned land and had a certain amount of money. The Hill family had more money than the Fields family but both families were land owners.

The Thomas family by contrast owned no land. They were itinerant farmers. They had never owned anything, living in shacks that were rented wherever they might be at the time. Most of the children had to go to work very young. Census records indicate that some of "Bear" Thomas' daughters were working before the age of 9.

Johnson Fields referred to the Thomas family as "Poor, white trash." The truth is that both Wilford Fields and Gladys Thomas grew up working hard. Wilford helped out on his dad's farm from a young age, Gladys Thomas had to work all her life to help out the family.
