Muster Roll of Co L, 2nd Kansas Cavalry, US Army-April 30 to June 30 1864.
Submitted by James Johnston and Jan B Eddleman.
In Oct of 1861 A C Davis of Wyandotte Co, Kansas, was given permission to rais
a volunteer regiment of cavalry for the US Army. Originally named the Twelfth
Kansas Volunteers from Kansas. The designation of the regiment was later
changed to Ninth Kansas Volunteers. On March 27, 1862, the organization became
by order of the governor of Kansas, the Second Kansas Cavalry.
Most of the regiment's early service was in Kansas, but by July of 1862 they
were in what was then Indian Territory (Okla). On July 26, they were in
Baxter Springs on the Quapaw Reservation, and by Aug 1 they were in Tahlequah.
They moved on to Park Hill by August 3, where "after securing the archives and
treasure of the Cherokee Indian Nation, and being joined by John Ross,
principal Chief, and Lewis Ross treasurer, with their families and friends"
(Burke) returned to their camp at Baxter Springs. Part of the unit then
escorted the Ross party on to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
After finishing the summer on duty in Kansas and Missouri, the cavalry unit
entered Arkansas in October, where they reached Elk Horn Tavern (Pea Ridge) on
the 16th. On Oct 17 they moved to Sugar Creek and on the 18th to Cross Hollows.
The 19th saw them in Mud Creed. Having moved the Confederate pickets and
outposts twenty miles, they returned to Pea Ridge on Oct 20. The same day they
started a march to Maysville arriving there on Oct 22. The regiment was
involved in skirmishes in that area until Oct 31 when they marched to the rear
of the diviision at Spavina Creek and were paid.
In November, they were in the Bentonville area and advanced to Prairie Creek,
Brown's Mills, Rhea's Mills, Cane Hill, Dick Oliver's, Cove Creek, Cincinnati,
Boonsboro, Natural Dam, Lee's Creek, Evansville. They remained in Northwest
Arkansas area until January 1863, when they returned to Missouri. The regiment
returned to Arkansas in August, seeing duty in Indian Territory and as far
south as Perryville and Dardanelle, including Fort Smith, Waldron and
Booneville. The were also involved the the Battle of Backbone Ridge against the
forces of Confederate General Cabell.
During this winter of 1863-1864 three of the Kansas Officers, Pat Cosgrove,
Joseph Hutchinson and John O Miller were successful in recruiting another
company for the regiment from local residents. Some of these Sebastian County
men had never been in favor of secession and joined in support of the Union.
Others joined because by this time the economic situation of the area was
dreadful. Trade had been totally disrupted by the was and agriculture was
almost impossible with the confiscation of crops, supplies and farm animals by
both armies. The Union Army offered food, clothing and pay which could be used
to support families. On March 2 1864, Company L of the Second Kansas Cavalry
was officially recognized and Pat Cosgrove was appointed as its captain.
After the formation of this company, the unit was to see further action deeper
in Arkansas, moving from Fort Smith to Booneville, Rock Creek, Danville,
Fourche La Fave, South Fourche, the midle fork of the Saline River, Magnet
Cove, Midway, Arkadelphia, Antoine Creek, Okolona, Elkin's Ferry, and Sulphur
Springs where they joined General Steele in his unsuccessful Red River
Campaign. In this campaign they saw duty at Camden, Prairie de Anne, Poison
Springs and Jenkin's Ferry.
In May the unit was returned to Fort Smith, went to Fort Smith, sent to
Clarksville and again returned to Fort Smith in June where they remained for
some time. On June 15, 1864, thirteen men from Co L deserted, perhaps because
some of them had not been paid since their enrollment and some had not been
paid at all.
Companies E and L were sent in August, 1864, to Fort Gibson in Indian
Territory. While there, on Sept 16, all but twelve men of a detachment of
Companies E and L were killed by Confederate cavalry while guarding a haying
party. In Sept of 1864, the company was ordered back to Fort Smith where they
remained.
On March 18, 1865 Co H of the Second Kansas Cavalry was mustered out and the
veterans and recruits from that company were assigned to Company L. Later in
March the remainder of the men in Co E were reassigned to Captain Cosgrove's
company also.
In May of 1865, the Second was ordered to Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation, where
they were mustered out of service on June 22, 1865, with Captain Pat Cosgrove,
First Lieutenaant Joseph Hutchinson and Second Lieutenant John Miller.
The following information is taken from the Muster Roll of Company L, Second
Kansas Cavalry, April 30, 1964, to June 30, 1864. All periods of enrollment
were for three years and the "last paid date:" is as of June 30, 1864. Where
there is a question as to the name, it is followed by (?).
