Sawadee,
Last December 2000, the Missions Outward Bound team of 9 youths/young adults from Bartley Christian Church went on 12 days pilot missions trip to Northern Thailand. We had a wonderful time visiting our missionaries Nellie (in Chiangrai) and Christina (in Chiangmai) and being in partnership in their ministries. Here are the highlights of what the team experienced in the words of our member Lynn.

Day 1- 15 December 2000
Departure day. After weeks of training, we were finally going off. How exciting. Reached airport and some of the youth and church staff send us off. We had 7 big bags to check in on top of our own personal backpacks!
Reached Bangkok but had to wait 2 hours to board the internal flight to Chiangmai. Meanwhile, window-shopping at the DFS! No wastage of time!
Reached Chiangmai at 6.30pm. Thank God for a safe journey. Were received by Golf, Ying and Dear ( our guide for the next few days ). Had dinner at Lemon Tree. Splendid! Didn't know that Thai food can be so marvelicious!
Day 2 - 16 December 2000
Had breakfast in the guesthouse. Good stuff! Subsequently, we had briefing by Christina ( our missionary in Chiangmai ). She touched on the culture of the Thai and the different tribes that exist and the lifestyles led by the locals. After that, Dear taught us some basic Thai language and before we knew it, we were going to hit the market to do our purchases using the foreign language. My partner and I bought the wrong thing perhaps due to our wrong pronunciation.
Buffet for lunch. Gosh! If I were to go on like this, it would be a matter of time before I ballooned. But the food is oh! so nice! Anyway, we had a Jericho tour around the city of Chiangmai. Had a brief understanding of the history of Chiangmai. Went to the different gates in the inner city of Chiangmai, Payap university, McKean rehabilitation centre, Chiangmai foreign cemetery which houses the tombs of missionaries, Chiangmai university and the last stop, Ang Kaset. It was beautiful as you overlooked the city and what is so much better is the serenity that the lake offers. Simply refreshing after a long day.
At Ang Kaset
Had dinner at a barbecue restaurant. Argh!!!!!
Day 3 - 17 December 2000
Sunday! Church-going day. Went to Grace Church in the morning in which the sermon was delivered in thai. Thankfully, there was a caucasian missionary translating for us. The pastor Dr Henry was so passionate about the work in Northern Thailand that it humbled me. Had lunch with the church members.
In the afternoon, went to the youth fellowship in First Church ( first church in Chiangmai, literally! ). Couldn't spend a lot of time with them. They had games and we joined in. It was fun.
In the evening, went for the service for the foreigners in First Church. Kind of unstimulating as the service comprised only of skit and chorals.
Had dinner at a food court near the Night bazaar. Well, had a glimpse of the bazaar but we were not buying anything until the last day!
Day 4 - 18 December 2000
Woke up early as we had to travel further up to the Nago hostel. It was a 4-hour ride and was straining on the back. Reached the place at noon. Very kampong-style with a modern twist. The house was colonial-like from a distance.
We met Nellie ( missionary in Chiangrai ) and I felt she was quite strict. Had chicken and sticky rice for lunch. This was indeed a big change from the sumptuous gourmet that we had in Chiangmai. Nonetheless, it was still food. No complaints.
Put up the Christmas decoration before the hostel students came back from school.
I found that I was handicapped by the lack of Thai language and thus could not communicate with the students effectively.

Day 5 - 19 December 2000
Went to Ngao Primary School to perform and to teach English in a way to the grade 5 and 6 pupils. It was tiring but well-worth the effort as the pupils all enjoyed it. We knew it by the laughter that engulfed the hall. Before we went off, we enjoyed a moment of glamour as the pupils came up to us to sign on their autograph books.
Went back to Ngao hostel and in the evening we had barbecue for dinner. It was indeed a spread. So different from
back home.
We also put up a show for the hostel students and a message behind it. They really enjoyed themselves, laughing their heads off during out silly magic show.
Had to wake up early to travel up to Nellie's place, further north.
Day 6 - 20 December 2000
Set off for Nellie's place at 5.30am. It was cold in the morning. We set off in 2 batches. I was in the first batch together. Nellie was afraid that when the bus came, we had to spilt up if there was no vacancy. When the bus arrived, guess what? The bus was quite empty and also the second batch people came on time just a minute after the bus arrived! It was really a providence from the Lord. We were so thankful!
Nellie's place
Reached Nellie's place at waterfall basin ( a term used by missionary ). Very village-style and you have the company of the hens, pigs, buffalos and dogs. I have not really experienced this type of life before and it was really an eye-opener.
Renzi was down with food poisoning. She went to the toilet frequently and vomited a lot. Hongyan was down with fever and Megan wasn't well too. We were quite concerned about Renzi and there were plans that she be sent back to Chiangmai for treatment. Everybody else was tired. I felt that the Lord was reminding us that we had not been covering ourselves with prayers.
Went to the river to bathe. Ohh!!! what an experience. However the villagers must have thought that we were really mountain tortoise.
Bathing in the River
Day 7 - 21 December 2000
Renzi was well, thank God! She was up and about again, making jokes. Everybody was well too.
Spent the day doing props for the Christmas service for the church in the village.
Yeah! The completed props!
Day 8 - 22 December 2000
It was Christmas service for the Mien ( the minority group ) here. We put up a program for the children and adults alike and thereafter one for the children.
In the afternoon, the youth from another village came and sing songs together with the children. It was so good to see them labouring with us.
Night fell. Gift exchange with the church.
Day 9 - 23 December 2000
Saturday.
Morning:
We went to the Mien church to take charge of the Sunday school ( though it wasn't Sunday ). We did some craft work with the kids.
Afternoon:
We had a prayer walk around the village. Some information. The house next to Nellie's is a drug trafficker. That explains the frequent motorcycles passing by. There is also a popular spirit priest in the village. The headman's house is grand for a village's standard. In fact, it IS good and beautiful, all complete with teak wood.
Evening:
Nellie shared to us about her ministry in the village. She also shared how she got involved with missions. We had a better understanding now and could say that we are in a better position to be praying for her.
The night was getting colder.
Day 10 - 24 December 2000
Christmas Eve. Sunday. We travelled to another village. This would also mean that we were leaving Nellie's place. Good memories will embed in my mind. Nellie's cooking ( boiled rolled oats in the morning, vegetable soup and noodles for lunch and dinner and of course the popular banana bread! Simply mouth-watering ). In these few days, I learnt to appreciate the little things that were given to me. I learnt not to waste water and to eat and live simply. Most importantly, I learnt to rest in the Lord.
We went to river mountain for the Sunday service there. There were more people attending there. But then again, the people in waterfall basin went there to worship as well thus explaining the big turnout.
Had lunch in the church and before long, it was time to bid farewell. There was a sense of sadness and loss as we left. Though we barely knew one another, we knew deep down in our hearts that the bond that Christ had made was there and that's why the emotions seep in.
Travelled to Chiangrai bus interchange to go back to Chiangmai. Before that, Nellie gave us a treat in Swenson's and our spirits rose. But then the spirit was down again as we said goodbye to Nellie. Oh so sad! But I know our paths will cross again.
Reached Chiangmai after about 4 hours of ride in the coach.
Dear received us and she took us to have fried chicken for our meal. What a change from the simple meals we had in Nellie'splace.
Day 11 - 25 December 2000
Christmas! It was our R & R day. Went shopping with Dear inthe morning and in the afternoon, we took the opportunity to visit Maejo University. Two students showed us around the campus catered to farm
The long march around the campus visiting the cow farm
studies. They showed us around the different farms inside the campus. We were thankful to them for they had exams in the next days but they took the burden to show us around.
It was a beautiful view behind us...with mountains, greenery and good friends. Oh! What more can we ask?
We departed from Maejo and went to the popular spot in Chiangmai, the night bazaar. Apparently, we were too early for the operation of the stalls and we passed the time in a bubble tea shop. After that, I shall not elaborate more. You should know better. But one comment though, the bargaining was VERY tiring. It was a form of survival of the fittest!
Day 12 - 26 December
Last day in Chiangmai. Memories, memories. All was left after these 12 days were memories. Good, bad, you have them all. But I believe that this trip had opened our outlook on northern Thailand and had learnt much things. May we forget not the memories oh so precious.
