Notes from the Chairman

Dear BJEC Member,

I want to take this time early in the year to say what a pleasure it will be to serve as your Chairman for this new millennium year 2000! I think, as a circuit, we are on our way to great things. There will be some new ideas for the upcoming year and the banquet will be fun as well as informative. Be there to get your freebees and prizes.
If at any time during the year you want to discuss an issue with me, please feel free to give me a call after hours at home. We are looking for ways to increase the membership of BJEC and make the circuit a more recognizable circuit to the rest of the off-road motorcycling community. So, I want your input. Give me a call.
Right now we are working on the race schedule to increase the number of events for 2000 and if we are successful we will have 11 rides for the year. Next year we hope to be back to 12 races in our geographical area.
These events are good events and I hope BJEC can support the clubs in making them even better to facilitate our membership. There are a couple of new classes to help the ?A? and ?B? riders. Look into those and see if you or some of your friends can come out and support the local BJEC event.
Again I am happy to be here to serve in this capacity. BJEC is headed in the right direction and with your help we can make it even better. I wish all of you success in the upcoming year and on the trials ?Good Luck!
Thanks,
Jim Holub

2000 Contingency
By Shawn Hall
The Black Jack Enduro Circuit continues in the 2000 season with a contingency partnership with Kawasaki, Suzuki, Husky and Yamaha. All three factories will provide paybacks in the AA, A and B classes. The Kawasaki will pay on 10 events, while Yamaha and Suzuki will pay on 7. The total potential payback is over $20,000 for each of the three programs. For exact details see your local dealer.
BJEC Suzuki Contingency for 2000 The only bikes that qualify are the new DR-Z400 and the DR Z400E. The classes that qualify are Open A, Open B, Open C, Vet A, Vet B, and Vet C, Senior A, Senior B and Senior C. The payout is $400 - 1st, $200 - 2nd, $100 - 3rd, $50 - 4th, $25 - 5th. They are paying 8 events. Which are all the events except Stillwater, Jimmy Jack, Breezy Hills and Red River. It looks like a pretty strong program for those who want to try out the new 400. I have the forms if anybody is interested.
Husky Contingency The details of the Husky contingency are in. This is by far the most generous program by any of the manufacturers. In the AA class you will get $400 in cash for first place, $300 for second, and $200 for 3rd, $100 for 4th and $50 for 5th. They are also paying $1500 for first place in the series, $1000 for second and $500 for third.
The rest of the payouts are in Husky bucks, but that still means free parts if you finish well. The A classes are paying 300 for first, 200 for 2nd and 100 for 3rd. Listen up women, Husky is paying 200 for first in the womens class as well as the B classes. In Women?s and B the payout includes 100 for 2nd and 50 for third. In the C and youth classes the payout is 100 for first 75 for second and 50 for third.
This is the only program that pays for the C, women and youth classes. If you are still looking for that new scooter, give Wayne Crosby a call at Lebanon Suzuki, Husqvarna for more details. Wayne is offering an additional 50 husky bucks for 1st place in any A or B class and 25 husky bucks for and C class on a 98 or newer Husky purchased from his shop. Thanks to Husky for this great program!!
To finish off the manufacturers, Kawasaki is offering the following: AA - 1st - $350, 2nd - $200, 3rd - $100 200A, 250A, Open A, Vet A - 1st - $100, 2nd - $75, 3rd - $50 200B, 250B, Open B, Vet B - 1st - $75, 2nd - $50, 3rd - $25 They are paying 10 events. They are covering all events except the two Texas Races and they are covering them through the Texas series. I have forms if anybody needs them. We are currently working on the details of a program with EBC Brakes. We will have more details when they become available. Contingency is also available from many local shops for those that are riding Honda, Gas Gas and KTM. If it is not offered, It doesn?t hurt to ask. Many shops and gear manufacturers are ready willing and able to help riders. You don?t have to be a top rider. All you have to do is represent their product in a positive light. This is another example of: Support the people that support you. Have a great 2000 season. Also one note on circuit Sign up: PLEASE, PLEASE sign up at least 2 weeks BEFORE the first event. Go to the web site and print the form and send it in. If everyone waits to sign up Sunday morning at Bear Creek, your score could get messed up. Remember, you must be signed up before the event to get scored.

Stillwater Cancelled

At the Stillwater Trailriders Meeting on Jan 21. the 16 members present (pretty poor turn out since they have 1200 permit holders/members)voted not to have an enduro. There were only two of us present who race enduros. The Tulsa Trailriders has expressed an interest in hosting an event at Stillwater, this is against the rules that Stillwater Parks and Recreation Department has established about outside groups using the land. It comes down to the fact that those who ride in or around Stillwater need to step forward and do their part. Thanks, Justin Lockwood The Bad and the Good Yes, Stillwater is cancelled. The Tulsa Trail Riders (TTR) were trying to work out a deal with the Stillwater Club but it didn't happen. That's the bad. The good is, the TTR, with support from various Oklahoma clubs and individuals, have applied for Federal Funds to purchase 2,000 acres for off-road recreation. They won't know the outcome for several months but it looks promising. Federal funds are available for every state. You just have to know how to play the game. Good luck Oklahoma!

Bear Creek Enduro Cancelled
The winter storm that struck this week caused the collapse of our dealership, and it dumped 18 inches of snow on the trails. We do not know how much damage was done to the trees on the trails, and it could possibly be 2 weeks for that much snow to melt. This would not leave enough time to get the event ready. I have much more pressing issues to deal with trying to relocate my store and deal with the insurance co. to get my building demolished and rebuilt. If you need any questions answered you will have to contact me by e-mail or by cell phone @ 903/277-2669 during the day or 903/832-5323 at night. We would like to have our date for 2001 as we intend on continuing with the enduro in the future, Regards, Tony Orihuela [email protected] 1-29-2000
Tony ?O? is the main man of the Bear Creek Enduro. His motorcycle dealership in Texarkana was destroyed. If you get a chance e-mail him a few words of encouragement.

Cannon Creek Moving May 7th - September 24th

The goal this year was to return to Collins. The date we originally picked, May 7th turned out to be a turkey. Missouri Turkey Hunting Season is April24 - May 14. Collins was leased out for turkeys..I mean hunters. You know I've tried to hunt turkeys on my motorcycle without much success. I digress! We are moving - new date, old location. Hope to see you there.

Go Faster

by Brad Jones Part I
Have you ever just gotten on your bike and do the same old routine time after time, using the same old techniques you're comfortable with? I know I have. However, a long time ago I got to know Steve Wise, a factory Honda motocrosser in the late 70's and early 80's. Steve started doing motocross schools after he retired from racing. I lined up some classes for him here in the Midwest.
Steve changed my early 70's riding style into a smooth, controlled, yet aggressive, technique. Ever since then I have looked for ways to improve. Some technique change, but many of Wise's ideas still hold true today.
Now that I do my own schools, I see some of the same mistakes made over and over with each class.
Since Keytime is geared for Enduro racers, I would like to cover one of the biggest mistakes I see woods riders make when they blast around the motocross track. Woods guys ride a gear too high. Now that I'm doing Harescrambles, I realize why this is a very good technique for woods riding. It conserves energy for long races and it also helps the motorcycle track better over uneven terrain like creeks, roots, rocks, etc.
However, most MX tracks are groomed so traction is often perfect. There are no trees to dodge or stumps to look out for. Grass tracks that are used in some off-road races are similar because they are smooth and fast. This is the time to be aggressive. Horsepower is made at the top of the powerband so use it!
Now let's talk about the slowing down part. When braking, the engine compression can be used to slow the bike down, 2 stroke or 4 stroke. DO NOT PULL THE CLUTH WHEN BRAKING! As soon as you chop the throttle, start downshifting. This will not hurt the transmission to downshift
without the clutch during braking. This is just like anti-lock brakes on a car. If your wheels lock up, you're losing traction and skidding, sometimes losing control and cracking.
I have a skill drill for you. Ride the bike in 1st gear all the way around the track as fast as you can. Do not use the clutch. Rev the engine and notice how much better the wheels track. Get used to the sound of the bike making lots of noise at its peak RPM.
Watch the pros. Their bikes are wide open except under heavy braking. Because of this practice, I don't stall very often. If I do, it's almost always because I was too lazy to downshift into a lower gear.
If you stall your bike, remember what Brad said. "Don't be lazy, downshift when decreasing your speed."
Upshift quickly when accelerating. If you watch ESPN 2 and see the supercross riders, notice they almost all use this very technique. Kevin Windam barely touches his clutch. Shane Watts makes the same claim and rides 125's in GNCC's. Give these ideas some consideration and go win some races.

Brad Jones will contribute Go Faster Articles for Keytime 2000. Brad taught motorcross schools for Steve Wise in the Eighties and conducts his own school presently.

New Business - Passed Motions

By Lee Glenn
1. Vice Chairman and Secretary positions combined in 2001.
Editorial Comment (E.C.) - We added an officer position last year, web site officer, and did not want to get top heavy with officers.
2. It is recommended that Enduros be sixty (60) ground miles in length. Omit B-cut off.E.C. - B-cut off was not working with over half the Enduros not having a legitimate B-cut off (75% of the A-Loop)The motion carries the work recommended so clubs still have the freedom to run whatever mileage they choose. It is hoped they will run 60 miles because the belief is that B-riders don't mind riding 60 miles. Enduros longer than 60 miles, from a club's perspective, impact-land usage, manpower, cost, and trophy presentations, time. The goal this year is to have trophy presentation by 3:30 p.m. Yeah Baby!

3. New short course classes "A" & "B".No "age" or "CC" restrictions No overall awards End of year 1st place B advanced to A. E.C.- There are no excuses for you not to ride. A class for everyone.

4. Recommend we have kids races on Saturday: Classes: 0-6, 7-8, 9-11 E.C. - I know two clubs (Chadwick and Flat River) that have insurance only for Sunday, an extra day would cost several hundred dollars. The rest of the circuit looks pretty positive to kids races. It is the future of our sport.

5. Mandatory water at main gas stops. E.C. - Has anybody seen the BJEC orange water jugs? HELP!

6. Mandatory mile markers every mile. Motions that almost passed:1.Old guys, over 50, are allowed one "Mulligan Check" per enduro. 2.You are allowed to write your own score down.E.C. - I think this motion had great potential but unfortunately all the youngsters (under 50) voted against it.

Steve "Red" Vanzant Interview

Overall A 1999
By Lee Glenn
Steve emerged from the A Senior (40+) class to win A Overall. Steve had been absent from the circuit since '94 due to medical problems. As you can tell, he is back, stronger and faster than ever. In '99, Steve rode a '93 Honda CR250 that he bought used. This is a condensed 30-minute interview with Steve.
Question: This year you rode Honda and you've got a GasGas ride coming up for next year. How did that happen?
When I went to Little Rock a friend of mine wanted someone to ride a GasGas in the Black Jack Circuit. He said you didn't have to be the fastest person, just someone that everyone knew. At that time, I really wasn't interested. I wanted to continue to ride for Heartland Honda. They have been very good to me. However, Heartland Honda became a GasGas dealer and gave me a pretty good deal. I prefer to ride with them as a team rather than doing it alone.
Question: How much seat time have you got on your GasGas? About 500 miles. I raced at Ft. Smith, the Grand Prix down there. I still have a little work to do but I feel like I'm getting faster. I don't have it quite as fast as my Honda, but I'm still working on it. I feel pretty comfortable on it.
Question: Do you have any training routine? I ride a lot. I try to train, but don't have the time to do as much as I'd like. I have a real physical job. I'm a farmer and do a lot of physical work. I probably ride more in the winter than anybody, when I'm not as busy with my farm. My cabin at White Rock burned down but we pulled a trailer down there so we have a place to stay. It's a good riding area. There's a little bit of everything to ride in. Every year when the races start I seem to be ahead of everybody, but in the summer, I go to the lake and take a break from riding. I didn't ride enduros for 5 years. I came back in '99 and didn't know what to expect. I had been riding with Travis and Jeff Fisher. Jeff is the man to beat. He's younger and much better than I am. He will probably win it this year. I think I can still ride with Travis fairly well.
Question: Did you have any goals at the beginning of the year? Yes, I wanted to finish 2nd overall, or at least in the top 5 overall. I was rusty in my timekeeping and gave away a couple of races by being stupid. I didn't have a computer. All I had was roll chart and watch. I just ran by the seat of my pants. It cost me a few races. I was closer than some people realize. At Little Rock, a bad check kept me from being up there with the big boys. That happened at a couple of races, but it went the other way for me in other races where somebody else messed up. Jeff should have beat me at Bear Creek but he burned a check. I enjoy racing, the other riders and the fans. Everyone respects each other and I like that.
Question:What are your goals for this year?
I'd like to do the best I can and show that I can still ride in the AA class. I'll take it one race at a time. My biggest goal is to go to the ISDE qualifiers. I want to be one of the three Senior Riders. I also want to ride all the Black Jack races. I also want to ride some hare scrambles. We have some good ones in this part of the country.
Question:This year is our 25th Anniversary of the Black Jack. What are some of your earliest memories?
I remember when we used to go to John Zink Ranch to race. It was a terrible place to race and a real eye-opener for me. I rode in the A Class and I had a chip on my shoulder. I thought enduro riders were old men. I raced 130 miles with 10 riders and came in 9th. At that point I wasn't sure I wanted to race enduros. I had a new bike when I started and it was just trashed by the time I finished. I realized there was more to the sport than I had thought. We have, and always have had, some of the fastes old men I've ever seen. I think we have too many classes. Everyone wants a class to himself. Back then, you spent all of your time tightening your chains. O-ring chains are the best things ever invented. I also miss the 3-man teams. It was prestigious back then. I wish they would come back.
The timekeeping was more straightforward and simple then than it is now. It seems more confusing now.
Question:Do you have anyone you want to thank? Greg Donahue, at Heartland Honda for helping me. Without him, I couldn't race. I also want to thank Don Knight at GasGasNorth America for giving me a chance to ride a GasGas this year.
I want to thank all the clubs for doing a tremendous job in putting on these enduros this year.
I do want to close with a revealing final thought from Steve.
"Overall, I love the people. I go out to race and have fun. It used to be 90% to race and 10% the people. Now it is just the opposite. When I go to the races, I feel like I have no pressure on me. I go out to have fun and I don't worry about the rest of it. I love the people and now it's 10% to race and 90% to see my old friends. The thing I missed most for having to sit out for 5 years were my old friends."
Well said Steve! Good Luck in 2000

The Gym
Secret Weapon #1
By Rick Helmick

I don?t usually give up my best secrets to just anyone, but my enduro pals deserve a break. Sometimes it is not how hard you train, it is how smart you train.

I hope you all have been putting in your time at the gym. It will pay off! How many of you took my advice and hit the weights hard in December for bulk and strength? How many are now cutting back on the weight and increasing the reps preparing for endurance? How many of you are using heart rate monitors when training? How many of you (especially over 40 guys) are giving your body enough rest between workouts?
How many of you are investing in the right nutrition and supplements? If you cannot answer yes to all or part of these questions then you are working hard not smart. Somebody asked me where I get my information on fitness. My reply is always the same, I read fitness journals, I talk with top local cyclist, and triathletes. You have to dig for the information you need for your particular needs.
Everyone is different when it comes to strengths and weaknesses. So what works for one guy doesn?t always work for the other guy. Some of you were born with mostly fast twitch muscle and some of us have slow twitch muscle as a dominant type. . Now, all of us have both in our bodies but usually have more of one than the other. This is the difference; fast twitch is for sprinting and slow twitch is for endurance.

As a result each person will work out differently to accommodate their needs for their sport. If you want to short cut this information seeking process, find yourself a good personal trainer like the Pro?s do. Other wise you will be stuck reading this article and taking orders from 007.

Your assignment until next time is to use your secret weapon and train smart as well as hard. Good luck and see ya at the races!
