Jiu Jitsu is a martial art with a long history.Jiu Jitsu teaches a variety of techniques, including defences from punches, kicks, Baseball Bats, Chains and Knives (and many more). However unlike many martial arts Jiu Jitsu has many different techniques for each weapon and attack. This gives the practitioner of Jiu Jitsu an ability cope with many situations and allows them to improvise against the unexpected. This makes it less likely for something to get through. The techniques taught in Jiu Jitsu are comprised in the main of Joint locking and throwing. However striking and other skills are also taught. The philosophy of all these techniques is to maximise effect whilst using minimum strength. Consquentaly it is possible for a 5ft, 8 stone person to throw a 6ft 4 inch, 15 stone aggressor. This philosophy applies equally were the practitioner to apply a locking technique. The techniques taught are defensive in nature as the practitioner will not seek out confrontations for the sake of violence. Finally as part of Jiu Jitsu training, everyone is required to learn to fall safely and to roll. This is a most usefull skill, as statistically you are far more likely to fall over each day than be assaulted, although a fall on the street is less likely to land you in hospital. |
