The F1 Petition against Max Mosley!
|

Bring back slicks!
|
Hi, I've set up this page in order to get feedback from the fans of F1 as to their views on which way the sport should be going.
I'm running a petition to send to the FIA in order to campaign to make the sport more exciting again.
On 3rd June 99, Mosley stated in the UK press that the F1 drivers should stop their whingeing and get on with their jobs. He feels that because they are paid so much it is not up to them to decide whether they LIKE the cars they drive or not, and that they shouldn't have a say in what the rules of the sport are. Mosley states that he is making the cars safer for the drivers, and therefore they should just shut up!
What an amazingly egotistical statement! All this follows a public outcry that the '99 Barcelona Grand Prix was boring - the fans said it, the press said it, some top F1 people said it - but most of all, several of the top drivers (Schumacher, Coulthard, Hill and others) also said it was A BORING RACE!
What Mosley doesn't seem to have realised is that if this public viewing that F1 is boring continues to go on, the sport will drop into decline, his sponsors will pay less money, and F1 will lose its position as the pinacle of Motor Sport, and the most viewed sporting event in the world.

So what can we do?
|
Well, surprisingly little. Mosley has said in the past that F1 is a business, and not a spectator sport. Bullshit. Without the fans, then the sponsors wouldn't spend the money necessary to develop the cars. The viscious circle means that, sadly, this will affect our road going cars because F1 and other motorsports are used by the manufacturers to develop better, faster, safer vehicles for our public roads.
To make F1 exciting again, the FIA need to return to some of the old rules. The safety one is certainly an honourable and noble issue, and Mosley is crusading for the safety of the drivers. I respect that, and will not take that away from him - however, F1 cars today are already very safe except in one area: mechanical grip. By moving from slick tyres to grooved, the FIA have taken away the physical grip of the vehicle on the road in an attempt to slow the cars down.
It is obvious from the pace of these cars over the last two years that this has not happened - the McLarens and Ferraris this year are within a second of a lot of lap records - therefore they haven't been slowed that much! And because the mechanical grip has been removed, once the car starts to slide or spin it is much harder to control and invariably a relatively serious accident happens.
But, most of all F1 needs an injection of excitement - they need to pull the cars closer together, make overtaking easier and more regular, and make the general grid more competitive. Right now, it gets dull when the likes of McLaren or Ferrari build out unasailable leads of minutes rather than seconds. We need the excitement and competitiveness of the days of Senna, Mansell and Prost.
Mosley and his cronies aren't going to listen to the anonymous voice of one fan, but if a petition can be raised to him and the FIA for them to at least notice that WE think they're going the wrong way might at least provoke a response - I don't know, they may not do anything, but then again...
If you want to add your name to the list simply e-mail me on Mailto:[email protected] (or click on the link below) with your e-mail address and full name on the address below to let me know that you are in favour of bringing back slicks. I'm sorry if we don't mail you back personally, but thank you for your vote. If you fancy making a comment please feel free to do so, but please keep it short so that I can add it to a comments section on the Petition - long comments will be cut to keep space at a premium.
Thank you for your involvement.

Me :-)
|
Well - I'm Mark, 27 and live in Cambridge, UK, with my lovely wife Alison.
As you've probably guessed, I'm a hot F1 fan! I love motor racing in general, but F1 is my favourite; however, right now I find CART more exciting to watch; the trouble is, here in the UK it is not easily available to view, and it is shown at obscure times on Eurosport.
I have always been a Ferrari fan: I love the history of the company and the team. But I'm also a big Schumacher fan - convenient for me that they come as one in F1 then!! :-) I'm looking forward to the re-entry of BMW to the sport next year, as they are my favourite every day road vehicle.
I hope you'll join me on my quest to make F1 more exciting again, but if you have any general comments about F1 or just fancy a chat then please get in touch!!
