Lance Klusener gives South Africa their unassailable world-class depth in batting, as well as their unforgiving depth in seam bowling. He first appeared in one-day cricket against England in 1996/97 and was then elevated to the Test team while on tour to India.
Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin hit Klusener for five consecutive boundaries in his first Test innings but he returned to take 8 for 64 in 21 overs - the fourth-best debut in Test cricket. A hard-hitting batsman who has opened the innings with great success, the problem is growing for captain Hansie Cronje, as to where to bat the allrounder. His strike rate makes him a dangerous one-day performer, either as a pinch-hitting opener or a big-hitter further down the order.
Meanwhile, his lively bowling pace and considerable variations make him one of the most dangerous fourth-change bowlers in the world. Batting left-handed and bowling right is just another way in which he uses all of his attributes to get to a side, unnerve them and then apply the killer punch.
Klusener's nickname, 'Zulu', derives both from his African muscularity and the fact that he can speak the indiginous language.
