Rugby School which is situated in the centre of England was the first school to start playing the game, it was initially played on grass using a pig's bladder encased in leather for a ball.  The rules at Rugby School forbid handling the ball on the field of play unless the ball was airborne in which case it could be caught.  All players including the cathcher were to stand still.  The cathcher could then retreat and kick the ball either over the crossbar or anywhere they liked, if the ball went over the crossbar it was counted as a goal.  No ohter player on the field could move until the catcher passed the place where they had originally caught the ball.  In the 1840s running with the ball towards the opositions goal line was introduced.

The Five Nations' Cup was first awarded in 1984, the cup was a sterling silver trophy with 15 side panels representing the 15 members of the team and with three handles to represent the officials.  The cup's capacity was sufficient for five bottles of champagne.  In 2000 the five nations competition became the six nations with the edidtion of Italy.
