Louise Post and Nina Gordon met on New Year's Eve, 1992, through a mutual friend (actress Lili Taylor). They quickly realized they were musical soulmates and decided to form a band. Eight months later, they met bassist Steve Lack through a classified ad they'd placed in a local Chicago paper. Soon after, Nina's older brother, Jim, agreed to play drums and Veruca Salt were ready to rock. They made a four-song demo and were signed to Chicago indie Minty Fresh Records after only three live shows.

In January of 1994, the four bandmembers went into Brad Wood's Idful Studio to record their first album, American Thighs, which was soon picked up by Geffen Records. That summer Veruca Salt's first single, "Seether," a song about unsinkable wrath, received airplay on major radio stations across the country and the band soon had a full-fledged hit on their hands. A year and a half of touring ensued with the likes of Hole, PJ Harvey, Hazel and the Muffs, after which the band regrouped in Chicago to make their four-song EP, Blow It Out Your Ass It's Veruca Salt, with renowned recording engineer Steve Albini.

The now fully matured Verucas then found a new home at Geffen-affiliated Outpost Recordings and enlisted producer Bob Rock to help exorcise their indie rock tendencies by recording their long-awaited second LP, Eight Arms to Hold You. The album was made in four months in Hawaii and mixed by Randy Staub at A&M Studios, in Los Angeles; it was released Feb. 11. After the album was finished, drummer Jim Shapiro let the rest of his bandmates know he would be leaving Veruca Salt to pursue his own musical group. Much protesting from the rest of the band followed, but they ultimately realized that Jim had to follow his instincts and that they needed to find a new drummer. The band ran through a short list of names and started to audition people. They finally picked Stacy Jones, former drummer for Boston's Letters to Cleo. Stacy is now fully a member of Veruca Salt; he's the new person in the band photos and he'll be touring with the band and appearing in the video for "Volcano Girls," the first single from the album.
