BOBBY CHARLTON

Bobby Charlton joined Manchester united as a teenager. As a youngster he lived in he North- East of England and United couldn't believe there luck when the likes of Newcastle, and Sunderland didn't get there hands on this young foot-balling talent.

Charlton had his first taste of success by winning three youth cup trophies in succession. Soon after this he made his league debut. It came against Charlton Athletic in October 1956. He scored 2 goals that day and became an instant United favorite.

In total Bobby Charlton played 751 games for United scoring 247 goals. By 1958 he had established himself in the inside-right position.

At 20 he was part of the Munich air disaster in Belgrade. After losing so many friends he had to be strong enough to take the responsibility of captaincy, after only a few weeks after the crash.

After the disaster Bobby Charlton became a legend. He won an FA Cup winners medal, and took his team up the steps after scoring two goals for the European Cup. He also won two league championships (one before Munich), and his personal honours included a European player of the year and Footballer of the year.

His international debut came against Scotland in 1958, it ended in 1970 playing against West Germany. During that time he won 106 caps and scored 49 goals, in this duration his honours include a 1966 World Cup Winners Medal.

His final game for United came on Saturday 28th April 1973. The game was against Chelsea and 60,000 turned up to watch the last touches of one of the greatest ever players in British football. Today Charlton still remains one of the most honoured players in British football.

After life at Old Trafford he went on to manage second division Preston but after 38 games Preston were relegated, Bobby Charlton and Preston just did not click. He quit and had a brief go at managing Wigan, but he returned to Old Trafford as a director, where he remains today, the love still goes on!
