| It is with great happiness
and gratitude that we wish to inform the Guru-Sangat that local
Sikh community in the Hamilton (Ontario) area has begun rebuilding
the Gurdwara in Dundas.
Ground Breaking
By the Sangat's wishes, the new Gurdwara will be called 'Shahidgarh';
as it will be a memorial to the Panth's Shahids. The original
"ground-breaking" ceremony was performed on Guru Nanak
Sahib's Gurpurab in November, 2000, under the authority of the
Panj Piaray. The "opening-day" Ardas will be performed
during Shahid-Diwas week in the first week of June, 2002.
Sacrifices of the Khalsa Remembered
This project is very important for the Sikhs world-wide. Many
young Sikhs have given their lives for our struggle. Many innocents
have been brutalized, tortured and eliminated. Yet, not only is
most of the world ignorant of these atrocities, our own brethren/sisters
are uneducated about these brave and fearless warriors of human
rights.
We have already been offered generous words of encouragement
and support from Sikhs and Sangats around the world. But, in order
to see this project fulfill its ultimate aims and objectives,
we are in need of financial support.
Serving the Needs of the Sikh Community
The new Gurdwara will be a memorial to the Shahids of the Guru-Panth,
and as such the name of the Gurdwara Sahib has been chosen as
'Shahidgarh' (whereas it was originally known as Gursikh-Sangat
Hamilton-Wentworth). The Gurdwara is located at 200 Old Guelph
Rd., Dundas, Ontario, and it is frequented by Sangats from around
the Greater Horseshoe Region.
The new building is being constructed over-top of the old 'school'
building that the local Sangat had purchased many, many years
ago. Shahidgarh Gurdwara Sahib will also house a Shahidi Library
and Museum, wherein a modern-style historical record, documentation
and presentation of the Khalsa Nation's Martyrs will be archived
and displayed.
Shahidgarh Gurdwara Sahib will also have computer facilities
and school-rooms for the instruction of the younger generation
of Sikh children, as well as discussion-style areas where more
mature Sikh youth can communicate regarding current Sikh issues.
There will also be a general Sikh Library within the premises.
Furthermore, there will be sports facilities added later to the
perimeter of the Gurdwara's property for the Sikh youth.
The Building
Shahidgarh Gurdwara Sahib is located on a hill in scenic Dundas,
just outside of Hamilton, Ontario. It is accessible by the main
freeway in Southern Ontario, and, when completed, its Khanda and
Dome will be noticeable from miles (kilometres) around.
The final blue-prints have the total height of the Gurdwara Sahib
at 121 ft. from the ground to the top of the Dome. This total
height does not include the possibility of a Khanda on top of
the Dome, which will be 21 feet high. The Dome itself will have
a 30 foot radius at its base, and a height of 40 feet. The whole
structure will have 1 Major Dome and 4 'Gumbads' (minor dome-like
structures). The lobby will have a 32 ft. high ceiling with 2
rounded stairs that lead to the main Diwan Hall upstairs.
The final building will be one of beauty, peace and majesty.
The Hamilton Art Gallery has already contacted us to ask for our
permission to conduct 'tours' of the Gurdwara upon its completion!
