Wingin's Vacation: This is the lovely home we were living in on the Sheepscot River. The home is called the Woodbury Hodgdon-Grant House, build sometime in the late 1700's. As originally built it was a ordinary story and a half Maine coast home. Later the roof was raised and otherwise enlarged pretty much to its present shape and size. The detached garage at the north was recently added and copies the disinctive lines of the the main house. Oh and by the way we only had the apt. over the garage. But it had a very nice view also. It was a very warm home, and no ghost.!! I have added a picture of the new place we have moved to below.
Well here I am enjoying my vacation, and the wonderful sights and seafoods. Wish you all could be here with me, but since you can't I'll share the scenery and fun on here with you. I am told there are many lighthouses here to take pictures of, so far I haven't been able to get close enough to get any pictures. I'm studying the maps and will figure out this road system yet!!
There was a lovely double Raindow the other evening, but alas I couldn't get a picture of it all, my field camera is sitting at home in Utah. I only brought my digital camera with me, I wanted to try it out. Big mistake!! Live and learn!!
I have even tried my hand at salt water fishing. Being a inlander I only know how to fish for fresh water trout. But never fear I shall conquer it and catch something. Maybe I'll catch a skate; Yikes!! More likely it'll be an offspring of Jaw's and I'll wish I had stayed in Utah.
I've found if you don't like the weather here, just give it a minute it changes lickly split. Each day you try to deceide what to wear, shorts or long johns, there doesn't seem any in between. But I'm being told it will warm up soon, the ocean breeze is nice though. So that is why my field camera sits at home, I had to bring all-seasons gear. Besides being female I need lots of clothes, its that or shop till I drop.
The picture above is a evening shot out the back of the big house. It is beautiful here in Maine. I will add more pictures and venture out to hunt down lighthouses, and other points of interest. For those of you that have never seen how lobsters are caught, here are pictures of a lobster boat at work. They come by every few days and check the traps. Neat to watch!!
Hey, guess what I found a lighthouse!! Whew, for awhile there I was thinking they were kidding about there being lighthouses. This one is the Pemaquid Point Light Station. It was established in 1827, and then the original was replaced in 1835. In the 1850s the present lantern was installed and over the years other buildings were added. In 1897 a small red fog bell signal house was built in front of the keeper's dwelling. A tall, thin, weight tower can be seen next to the bell house. When the weights descended they powered an automatic fog bell machine in the small house. Occasionally a cam would let loose a sledge hammer which went through a small slit in the wall and struck a fog horn bell hanging on the seaward side of the house. The station was automated in 1934. It was a nice place to visit and read up on lighthouses. Oh, now there are only 61 Maine lighthouses left to find. LOL
Here is the new abode. It's a cottage on the west side of the island, we were on the east side. I'm told its the cottage the toll bridge keeper lived in way back when. Oops found out the toll keepers cottage is on the other side of the bridge. We have the lower half facing to the river, it sits on what is called the Back River, which channels into the Sheepscot River. Also, I'm told we are now living within the quarter mile of the best Stripper fishing on the east coast. Best wet my hook and see if I can catch dinner. "Yea" as JollyMon would say.
Below is a picture of the river out back, very nice here in the trees, cool and shady. There are seals here also, when the tide goes out they lay on the rocks that are exposed. I'm trying to snap a picture of them, but they are shy. It's very interesting here, really enjoying my vacation. So much to see and do!!
