Special Abilities

He is able to charm women (the saving throw is made at a -4 penalty), but he will only use this power against victims (see roleplaying the masked man)

He has a 90% chance to hide in shadows

He has the power of creating illusions to make would-be captors leave him alone while he kills his victims, these illusions are individual to every person present and are always related to anything the target character's holds dear (i.e a warrior sees his family being butchered, a paladin sees a burning child calling for help and he is unable to do heal him, a characters that lost his wife dances with her before he sees her wither in his arms, etc).

Note: This last power is actually a roleplaying tool I used to make my characters lose a victim they were suposed to protect, and so the DM should assign an appropíate penalty to the saving throw, or simply roll for them and make them fail (Believe, this ability of Arthur lends itself to superb roleplaying situations). And if anyone tries to stop him from wedding Victoria after the murders he will NOT use his illusions, he will simply rip apart anyone that stands in his way.

Description

Arthur is a fairly tall (1.79 mt) and charismatic man who appears to be in his early twenties, his raven black hair flows with the night wind and his eyes are green, with an unnatural luminiscense to them, his skin white and tender. He dresses in the finest of fabrics, always wearing an elegant party attire and a long black cape. He wears a party mask that covers the upper part of his face, this mask is white with a very long nose, and its upper part is covered with long feathers.

When angered, however, his teeth grow to sharp fangs and his soft hands become large claws, his eyes glowing red.

History

Arthur was born in Karg, a major city in Darkon, the only son of one of the city's guardsmen, his father died when he was two, and he was left in the care of his mother, who worked as a seamstress to support them, and, being Arthur the only family she had, was very overprotective of him . His mother died of a rare illness when he was 13, but he managed to survive working as a stable keeper in one of the many inns in Karg.

Four years later, he was employed as a kitchen servant by James Wescott, one of the richest men of Karg, father of three, James (23) the first born, and two daughters, Mary (17) and Victoria (15), well known for their beauty. Both James and Victoria were especially cruel with the boy, humiliating him for their amusement and mistreating him whenever they could. Mary, however, didn't like what her brothers did to the lonely boy, and always showed compassion to Arthur.

One thing lead to another, and over the four years that Arthur worked for the Wescott family, he and Mary began a relationship that began in friendship and evolved into passionate love, meeting at night under an oak in the garden. Victoria found out about her sister's romance and told it to her father, who was furious at her daughter's love for a lowly servant. Being an influential man, he had Arthur imprisoned and lashed.

After his release, Arthur was not able to find a job in any other house, but he managed to survive doing menial tasks here and there.

In spite of the adversities, Mary and Arthur still managed to meet at night in an old chapel, watching the stars from the bell tower. After some time, they decided that they would run away and get married, destiny, however, had other plans for them. One of Mary's maidens learned her plans to escape with Arthur, and told her brother and sister about them, infuriated by this, James followed Mary to the old chapel the very night she was planning to escape.

When she arrived, Arthur was there waiting for her, they kissed and were leaving when Mary's brother, armed with a sword, intervened, decided to end the daring former servant's life. Arthur and James fought in the bell tower before the screaming Mary, Arthur was unarmed, an obviously at disadvantage, but he somehow managed to push James off the tower, sending him to his death, but not before being mortally wounded. Dying, he told Mary to leave before anyone arrived, which she finally did, after quite a while.

Agonizing, Arthur was enraged beyond belief, cursing everything and everyone of how happiness always slipped through his fingers and how they would never pay. A shadow moved in the old walls, approached him and caressed him, whispering in his ear that he could make them pay, and see his beloved again, if he was willing to pay the price, he agreed.

A few moments later, the body of James was discovered, but the church appeared to be empty, except for a blackened human heart that was discovered in the bell tower.

A year has passed since those tragic events took place, and Mary hasn't recovered from it, and has turned down all men that proposed to her, hoping that Arthur is still alive somehow.

And he is, if you can call whatever he is living, he has recreated into a vengeful demon, and the price for his resurrection was great, for he can no longer feel love or care for anyone else, but he can still feel the loss, and he can still hate. What Arthur once was is now a mad killer, and in his madness, he believes that he can recover his ability to love by eating fresh hearts of young women who are in love (which is false).

He now prowls the night, murdering and planning his revenge on the Wescott family, and more importantly, trying to find a way to recover his beloved Mary.

Roleplaying the masked man

Arthur is now known as the masked man, because that is the way all the witnesses of his horrible crimes describe him.

He kills at night, preferably by ripping out his victim's heart with his claws, after which he eats it (anyone who sees this must make a horror check).

His victims are not random, they are somehow related to the Wescott family and especially to Victoria Wescott, her friends (women) and maidens are his first targets, he will kill nine women with regular lapses of time between them, and then he will kill the person he hates the most in this world, Victoria Wescott, being especially sadistic.

When he has done this, he will try to abduct Mary and marry her at midnight (in the old chapel they used to meet) like he always wanted to, and after that, he will kill her and comitt suicide so that they may be together forever.

He is cold and cruel, but he really doesn't want anyone involved in his feud with the Wescott household, and so will warn anyone who gets involved to back off before actually trying anything against them. If the PCs prepare an ambush or a stakeout at key points, he will use his illusion powers to make them feel the loss that he feels, hoping they will go away now that they can.
