Description

Azkarath is seldom seen, he prefers to watch the results of his machinations from a wise distance, but on the rare ocassions he will allow himself to be seen, he appears as a rather misshapen man dressed in a dirty black robe, with rags being used as bandages covering most of his body, the only exposed part, the face, is usually shadowed by the hood of his robe. Giving him the distinctive appearance of a leper. The stench of death and disease surrounds him.

If ever seen, his face is ghastly, his skin is pale as the dead, covered with ulcers and white scaly scabs, and it seems as if were too large to fit his face, for his skin folds in many wrinkles, giving him quite a horrible looking smile, showing his yellowed deformed teeth. His eyes are a very clear blue, devoid of any emotion, except madness.

History

Nobody really knows where the fiend known as Azkarath came from, he is barely ever seen, and those who do hardly ever keep their sanity, or their lives. He is widely feared in the rural setting, stories about rabid hounds or wolves attacking villages, masses of rats destroying entire cities and other stories surround the priest.

The most widely spread story about the origin of Azkarath, carried by bards and town elders to warn others about the monster's predations speaks of a noble child, born several decades ago to a fallen noble line. The child, however, was horribly deformed, his cries resembling animal growls more than human cries. It is even said that her mother fainted and nearly dies after seeing him.

Trying to hide the shame of having such a child, his parents locked him up in the fortress' tower, nearly forgetting all about him. He fed irregularly and from whatever leftovers the servants and stable keepers were kind enough to slip him through a small hole in the wall.

His mother eventually became pregnant and had other children, two beautiful healthy children, and these only fueled the couple's desire to forget about the monstrousity in the tower, hoping it would die soon enough. As Azkarath was growing up, his only companions were the rats and cockroaches of the dark tower. Altough fearful servants often talked about hearing the "child" talking to himself (or did he?).

Several years later, when the child became a man, he still lived in the dreary tower, his skin pale from the lack of light. Then, a deadly plague ravaged the fortress, killing all family members, servants and nearly everyone who dwelled there, and there was nothing the fortress' cleric could do about it.

As the frustated cleric prepared to leave the cursed place, he discovered that there was a hole on the tower's wall, the wall had been torn apart by somebody... or something.

Ever since that day, a wide rural area has felt the predations of Azkarath, entire towns and villages have been abandoned, their wells poisoned, their population dying from horrible diseases, suffering the onslaught of hordes of wild, rabid wolves, diseased rats and the like.

Roleplaying Azkarath

Azkarath never fights himself, he hates all living things with a passion, but will never confront opponents directly, his tactics are simply spreading diseases in small towns and villages, using diseased animals (rats, wolfs, dogs, etc.), poisoning food, water, etc. He will also go out his way to destroy healers and other good priests (especially priests of healing, of course).

A good way the party may get involved with Azkarath is by arriving at a town that is currently under attack by Azkarath, their healer died misteriously several weeks ago, and they have been under siege by a pack of wolves carrying a deadly disease, their food and water is poisoned, and if the cleric is not driven off or the population moved, little hopes of survival are left.
