Notes on Pronunciation: Latin words, unlike English, are pronounced exactly how they are spelled, and every letter is articulated. In words of two syllables or more it is usually correct to stress the next-to-last syllable. Some of the letters are also pronounced differently.

a long: as "a" in far short: as "u" in punk

e long: as "a" in pane short: as "e" in bet

i long: as "ee" in deep short: as "i" in pin

consonantal: as "y" in you (only at beginning of a word)

o long: as "o" in dope short: as "o" in copper

u long: as "oo" in fool short: as "u" in put

c always as in cape, never as in ceiling

g always as in goat, never as in germ

r always rolled / trilled

s always as in snake, never as in rose

v always as "w" in word

ae always as "i" in pine

ei always as "ay" in day

oe always as "oy" in alloy

ui always as "we"

 

Examples: Benedice is pronounced "Beh-neh-DEE-kay"

Iuva is pronounced "YOU-wa"

Laquei Ignis is pronounced "La-KWAY-ee EEG-nees"

Quercus Vivus is pronounced "KWAIR-koos WEE-woos"

Planities is pronounced "pla-nih-TEE-ays"

 

Some common forms seen in the list are:

i) Words ending in a vowel such as "muta" and "deprehende". These are verbs in the imperative, and usually come last in a sentence or phrase.

ii) Words ending in -i, -orum, -arum, such as "monstrorum". These are words (nouns and adjectives) in the genitive which means "of", so "Monstrorum umbrarum" would mean "Monsters of shadow".

iii) Words ending in -us, -um, -es, -en, among other endings, are usually nouns and come first in the spell name. I say usually due to the unsurprising fact that Latin, like all languages, has many irregular words.
